I'm not sure how likely this is, but it appears there have been discussions between JTG Daugherty and RCR and visits from Toyota at FRR. It also looks like Newman is indeed the favorite to hop into the #29 next year.

The move comes at a time when RCR is looking to fill the ride vacated by Kevin Harvick and hoping to retain its technical alliance with Furniture Row and is in exploratory discussions with JTG-Daugherty Racing to add the organization's No. 47 team to the fold as well. Currently FRR is weighing its options with other manufacturers since its contract with Chevy runs out at the end of the year. Toyota has visited FRR in Denver but nothing has been formalized either way. FRR principals have put their driver selection on hold until after the manufacturer decision has been made, which should be over the next couple of weeks.

As for RCR, sources say Ryan Newman has taken the lead in the search to find a driver to replace Harvick, who is leaving at the end of the season...RCR is hoping to hear from Furniture Row by mid-month to solidify its team and driver lineup for 2014. An announcement regarding Newman could come between now and Bristol race weekend on Aug. 23 -- with a new twist to the story. Newman's crew chief Matt Borland could be part of the equation as a package deal for RCR.

I hope FRR stays with Chevy

dont like the move to Toyota for FRR unless they get the same support as Gibbs and MWR

I'm sure FRR would only do it if they get to run TRD engines. In that case, TRD or ECR power isn't a very hard decision.

Toyota want Kurt Busch.

I can't believe RCR would want Newman over Kurt. Kurt is a hell of a driver. I think the flack he catches is blown way out of proportion.

Why? (not trying to be a jerk, just curious)

Jerk:D

Why change? The technical alliance with RCR and having Kurt is working pretty good. They have speed at every track and are contending for wins. Don't see what they'd accomplish by switching. Besides JGR & MWR the other Toyota teams don't do so well.

If FRR can get a better co-operative deal with a team like JGR, they would be fools not to make the move. They'll lose Kurt sooner or later and RCR isn't the most stable organization in the garage. They might as well get the best deal they can while they have Kurt.

It always comes down to the sponsor.

Damn! Two well thought out posts from you in a row:D

8 wins this year and drivers currently 2nd, 6th, and 7th in points, so they're doing ok. If FRR was a Hendrick satellite I think it would be stupid to switch, but RCR ain't exactly the cream of the crop anymore. I think they'd be better off being a satellite team for either JGR or MWR.

Article is mainly about Mark McArdle, engineer type that was working for furniture row. Family was back in the Carolinas and he was in Colorado going back and forth to RCR. He should strengthen RCR. In my perfect world, I would like to see Kurt in the 29. I think he could make that car dance. Newman could go drive furniture row's Toyota or Chevy or whatever they come up with that rolls.

I said besides MWR & JGR. JTG is a satellite team to MWR and hasn't seen much success. I agree about RCR, but FRR has never ran as good as they do now. If I was them I'd lock down KuBusch and work on adding a second car. I'd just hate to see them jeopardize what they have, regardless of manufacturer.

JGR won titles with a chevy and Pontiac, none with Toyota. I bet Jimmy has won more chase races than all of Toyota in a head to head comparison.
If Furniture Row wants to ever win a title, they should go to Hendrick engines. And RCR with Harvick has been very consistent this year.
Kurt and Furniture Row has the speed to win now, they just havent put together a complete race as a team.

There are probably getting as good now with RCR, in terms of consistency, rather than the TRD detuned dependent pieces.

doors wide open for Kurt to snatch a chase berth with Stewart out of it. Besides a couple of overly optimistic moves that wrecked him, and a pit crew that for the most part haven't gained him as many positions as they have lost him, Kurt is still in it. I think he has a contract thru this year, so if Furniture row switches to Toyota, Childress's "gentleman's agreement" with furniture row not to snipe Kurt would be null and void. Unless Childress doesn't get along with Kurt, I would want him over Newman in the 29

They have the speed. They just lack those big team resources when it comes to pit crews and info sharing. I'd love to see Kurt make the Chase unless it's at the expense of JG.

Not dishing the guy, but I think Jeff is going to be points racing tomorrow, trying to finish well, but he isn't going to go two wide unless it is really safe to pass. Kurt on the other hand will be driving like he is on fire

I agree. Top 10 will be good for them. The ONLY good thing about starting that far back is that it opens up the opportunity to take strategic risks.

I'll be at MIS next week and I hope like hell they can qualify better and stay the hell away from the back markers.

Qualifying hasn't been a strong point for them this year. Track position is important and he can never seem to get it at the right time. Hope he has a rabbit in the hat these next 5 weeks.

Yeah... it's been a frustrating year. Last week about crushed me.

Yep the qualifying is a big improvement opportunity. Better track position and pit selections would make them so much better.

JTG Daugherty split from MWR back in 2011. It certainly hasn't worked out for them.

And catching cautions at the right time...
Seems like every time he makes a green flag stop a caution flies:mad: Last week almost cost me a TV.
I may be over simplying but I think the better qualifying would help overcome some of the caution timing (and I agree the caution timing has been a problem).

But starting up front would have obvious benefits, and better pit stalls help to overcome the ill timed cautions.
I almost think their qualifying is bad enough to be at the top of the agenda for them, in spite of knowing you must finish to win. They really need to fix their qualifying. It is game of inches.

You are correct sir, since Toyota came into Sprint Cup in 2007, Jimmie has 15 Chase wins and Toyota has 9. And while it's true JGR hasn't won a title in a Toyota, neither has RCR in the same time span. Toyota does have a couple second place points finishes, the best RCR has been able to do since '07 is 3rd three times.

I think FRR will be OK regardless of whether they stay with Chevrolet or come over to the dark side, but I sure would like to see Kurt in a Toyota next year.

not me, he would look as stupid as his brother does driving one. :) and I would have to root for somebody else. NOOO ABT brotherhood speaks... bad mojo with Toyo.

Well he's driven a Ford, a Dodge, and a Chevy. He could complete the cycle by driving a Toyota next year ;)

He'd lose some fans I'm sure. Just like some people turned like a snake on Matt Kenseth when he came over to the dark side this year.

He has driven one of those T cars..it was in N'wide..I did my best..acted like it was a black Chevy.

Well I hope that is this happens FRM has Gibbs equipment because other wise its a very stupid move. And if JTG goes to Chevy using RCR equipment, that would be good -- it would revive a dying team.

Also I really hope Newman doesn't get the RCR 29.
