Had to put my 12 year old Akita down this afternoon.
His arthritis had just gotten too bad to combat with medication.

He went peacefully to the Rainbow Bridge as befits a very dignified old gentleman.
His ashes will soon come home.

They have that way of attaching themselves to us. There's really nothing quite like it.

I'm very sorry for your loss and a big believer in The Rainbow Bridge.

Really sorry for your loss, having to put one down is incredibly hard.

Damn. That really sucks. I'm sorry for your loss.
I haven't been able to get a dogs since my last two passed.
My girlfriend got a new puppy, a rescue, and although we don't live together, I'm already attached. Today we took him to the beach for his first time. He hopped right in. Today made me realize that I should have gotten a new dog long ago. I forgot how much dogs offer us simple humans.
Go rescue a new friend. It won't replace the big dog but it just might save both of you.

We're very sorry to hear about BD but in his shape he's better off across the bridge.

RIP Big dog...and TRL sorry for your loss

You have my condolences, TRL. It's always hard to lose a longtime companion, even when you know it is for the best.

My heart goes out to you as I just went through the same thing with one of my beloved felines who had been with me for 15 years. I am glad you are getting his ashes as I do the same thing and it is a nice remembrance. I still can't look at any pictures of him but hopefully I will be able to shortly.

Very sorry to hear TRL, I know what that's like. We recently put down our dog that we had for 16 years and man, that was hard.

I'm sorry to hear that TRL. That part of being a dog owner which is both ominous and heartbreaking as there is knowledge of the future loss of a cherished member of the household but there is also the inspiring and lifting realization that he lived from pup to ashes under your loving care. As humans we don't usually live such a fantasy.

The best way I have found to heal after losing a dog is to get another one.
I may --- eventually. But, I need to go places while I'm still fairly mobile and don't mind driving long distances. I haven't been able to leave my home
for more than a couple of days in the last 6 years. I have plans to travel --- maybe not as far as I would like, but I want to go.
And, before anyone says "put pet in kennel" --- no, I will not do that to an animal of mine. Period.

If I do wind up with a pet -- it will be an older, rescue animal and a SMALL one that I can pick up.

He's beautiful, be9ak ;) TRL - don't know if you remember me? Very sorry to hear about your Akita. :(

I'm so sorry to hear that. :( I know how much it hurts to lose a best friend like that. I hope you're able to take solace in the fact that you gave your Akita the best life he could have.

I have my Mocha's ashes. They are in the most beautiful wooden box with a name plate on it. When I move, it is going into the car with me.

Snowy seems slightly familiar. Hi, snowy. :)

Well great to meet you too! I have known a Lisa or two - I was at the old That's Racin' forum until it shut down, and then at RPMWarrior.net.

Oh ok, I joined here about 5 years ago, I think. The memory is the first thing to go.

Yeah TRL...dogs are great but they can be tough since they don't live as long as us humans (generally).

My son (now a grown young man) lost the Sheltie that I got for him as a kid. Had to let him go a year or so ago. It was a tough deal. The dog lived longer than most but had gone blind and was unable to control himself. Son did all he could with the Vet but was advised it was "time".

He wasn't interested in getting another pooch for a year or so - then he got word from a friend about a batch of Lab-mix puppies that would either have to be taken or they would go to the shelter. He grabbed one and is training it and he is all jazzed up about it.

I've always had a dog and at my age, I think I am good for one more dog. I don't really want the dog to out-live me...but I think I'm good for 20 more years or so...if not my boy will take over.
