"I'm just sorry we couldn't crash more cars today," he added. "We didn't fill the quota for Talladega and NASCAR."
...
"Honestly, if we haven't crashed at least 50 percent of the field by the end of the race, we need to extend the race until we crash at least 50 percent of the cars," he said. "It's not fair to these fans to see any more wrecks than that, any more torn-up cars. I mean, we still had over half the cars running at the end, and it shouldn't be that way."
...
"I had a blast," he said. "It would have been a lot more fun if I could have gotten caught up in one more wreck. If I would have done that, it would have been perfect."

Tonny Stewart Gives Bizarre Post-Race Interview After Talladega Race

May066:03p

by Jeff Gluck
Tony Stewart has given some memorable interviews over the course of his NASCAR career, but Sunday's post-race group session with reporters after finishing 24th at Talladega has to be his most bizarre ever.
For more than four minutes, Stewart put on an acting performance that would make Tom Hanks jealous. With a completely straight face, Stewart offered comment after comment about how great the racing was – even though he really didn't think so.
"The racing was awesome," Stewart said. "It's fun to be able to race and have to watch the (overheating) gauges at the same time. It just adds that much more. Being able to make yourself run on the apron and everything to try to get clean air, it makes it fun."
Hmm. Kind of a weird thing to say, right? But Stewart is the kind of guy who likes a challenge, so maybe he was being serious. There was no indication he wasn't.
"I'm just sorry we couldn't crash more cars today," he added. "We didn't fill the quota for Talladega and NASCAR."
OK, now clearly he didn't mean that. There's no way in hell Stewart thinks more cars should crash, and so his earlier quote was also a joke.
But here's the thing: Stewart did nothing – nothing! – to reveal he was kidding.
When a reporter asked about what NASCAR should do to alleviate the overheating concerns, Stewart took the opposite approach and said in apparent sincerity they should "close (the grille opening) down" and run the engines until they blow up "to make it more exciting for fans."
What. The. Hell? Yes, it was obvious Stewart didn't mean what he was saying if you listened to his words. But by his body language, tone of voice and facial expression, he appeared to be completely sincere.
"That's what the fans want," he insisted. "They want to see that excitement. I feel bad that as drivers, we couldn't do a better job of crashing enough cars for them today."
One reporter finally admitted he was confused and told Stewart it was hard to tell if he was upset with the racing or happy with it.
"I'm upset that we didn't crash more cars," he said convincingly. "That's what we're here for. I feel bad if I don't spend at least $150,000 in torn-up race cars going back to the shop. We've definitely got to do a better job at that."
OK, OK. So he didn't like the racing. But seriously, Tony: Why do you think the fans just want to see wrecks?
"I don't know if that's what they're looking for, but I feel like that's the show we deserve to give them," he said. "That's what's made Talladega, Talladega."
Another reporter then asked Stewart if he "had fun out there," to which the driver immediately nodded and responded "absolutely."
"I had a blast," he said. "It would have been a lot more fun if I could have gotten caught up in one more wreck. If I would have done that, it would have been perfect."
Again, this can't be emphasized enough: There were no cracks in the facade, even though Stewart was lying straight out of his ass. It was a remarkable, Oscar-worthy performance – and one that just kept going and going.
Another reporter pressed on, asking Stewart if he preferred the pack racing over the tandem racing.
"I think we ought to make it a Figure Eight (race)," he said. "I mean, if we could make it a Figure Eight, it would be perfect. It would absolutely be perfect here. It'd be better than what we've got."
At this point, I'll admit it: I could hardly contain myself. I was covering up my mouth giving every effort possible not to laugh in his face.
But Stewart wasn't done yet.
"Or we could stop at halfway, take a break, then turn around and go backward," he said. "Then, with 10 to go, we could split the field and half of them could go in the regular direction and half could go backward."
With that – and not a wink, smile or hint of sarcasm – Stewart saw there were no more questions, nodded to indicate the interview was over and walked away.

Best interview in the history of NASCAR.

:XXROFL:

Creepy dude.
I said years ago that Stewart has mental issues-----this was probably a case of one of his other personalities talking.

Seriously? Tony was being extremely sarcastic. How did you not pick up on that?

Yep...an all time classic...Making a mockery out of NASCRAP & Robin Pemberton...lol...Grounds for another "SECRET" $50k fine ??...I bet tony pays it with bagfulls of pennies.......

I just scheduled a few NASCAR shows to record because I want to see footage of this interview.

Sounds like he may have had a burr under his saddle today.

Stewart is a great driver, and I actually sort of like him occasionally. But he does slip into a prima donna mode every now and then( and always has) and make some pretty bizarre remarks.

Richard Petty, he ain't.

Save that kind of crap for fellow malcontent Kevin Harvick, is my opinion.

It's just Tony being Tony. The racing conditions at Talladega are a complete joke and Tony was expressing his opinion in his own unique way. I guarantee all of the other Cup drivers (other than maybe Carl Edwards) loves what Tony said.

Except for Brad Keselowski.

Brad Keselowski @keselowski
Wooop woop I love plate racing!

Wish Dega and Daytona had more racing. I love that they are close togather and no one gets a huge lead and its really anyone games. Other races put me to sleep. Today was good.

Definitely classic Stewart. Great to hear some of the young Tony back. He knows how to get things spiced up. Last week a water bottle. This week.....

He sure knows how to play the media and the fans.

It was funny for the first minute, then it got annoying. It seems he didn't get any reaction at first, so he just got more and more bizzare.

So, Tony is pissed at fans, Talladega, media and nascar because he didn't have a good day. Did Tony like tandem racing?

Sometimes I have to wonder if the reporters are even listening to the responses that they get. Especially in this case. Apparently ESPN caught this all on video. I'd like to see what kind of response he is getting during these answers.

Well, we know he was pissed @ NASCAR for what he thought was a water bottle that cost him a victory last week. Maybe that is still carrying over? Also, last week it was pretty evident that he was getting tired of all of the media questions about the lack of caution flags, wrecks, and the like. Take all of that and throw a 24th place finish, 4 laps down and it's a recipe for a classic Stewart interview.

No, I think you are wrong. You're guy won so it's hard for you to be objective on this.

So called "reporters" ask some of the dumbest question ever. She didn't even realize she'd been p'owned.

I can't help but think the brain got a chuckle out of this,,but of course Tony will be fined. The 11th Commandment"Thou shall not speak evil of na$car"

NASCAR said they got rid of the tandem because that's what the fans wanted. I expect Tony to start slamming and shoving out of frustration, and then saying "That's what the fans want". Tony always struck me as a guy who works himself up pretty good, and then proceeds accordingly until he gets it out of his system.

I don't think he'll react that way. He's just blowing off steam IMO.

IDK, that performance of his tells me he kinda snapped. If Tony starts dropping in the standings, I would look for him to get super aggressive about how he wants other guys to race. We haven't seen many of the patented Tony Stewart door slams for years, but they may return. Tony is VERY capable of justifying some strange behavior on his part. He went over board with Vickers at Sonoma and intentionally took out 4 other cars without batting an eye.

Well, he pretty much is already sitting in the Chase and his game is open to anything so who knows?

I think he has a nice 16 race test session left for him.

I remember Kez in the NW race at Nashville. He had a 10 mile an hour run on Carl after a 7 to go restart. Carl jumped out late to block, and Kez never let up (he raced like an idiot that weekend) and Carl took off through the infield like a torpedo. Kez said "I didn't expect Carl to make a move like that and I hit him pretty hard, but that's what the fans want to see".

So, we may end up seeing Tony quote Keselowski, and how weird would that be? lol
