Wonder how long that banner was loose before JJ needed a caution?

Had Johnson pitted, no way he would have won!

IDK about the banner caution thing but it is strange you can drag a jack around one week and there is no caution and a flapping banner causes one the next.

agree 100 %

It was a pure BS caution! If they are going to call a caution on that then they have to call a caution every time a piece of hotdog rapper or paper gets on the track. There is a human element in the throwing of debris cautions, as was proved yesterday.

I was thinking about this a little more last night. Can anyone confirm if JJ actually stopped on the track to bring out the caution?
My thought was, that if someone does stop on the track, the caution shouldn't be thrown until that car is at least 2 laps down assuming the car is out of the raceline. Then call the tow truck to make a slow march toward that lapped car and push it to the pits. The car would end up being at least 3 laps down if not more by the time it had fuel again. But too many cars stop on the track, wait for the caution to come out, and then fire it back up and drive away.

^ How would officials be able to tell whether or not an individual was having a mechanical issue.

If that's the case, why would we want to penalize the guy?

Not sure if I'm understanding the question fully, but in a trend that I have noticed, the cars tend to literally stop on the front stretch in order to draw out the caution. Then once the caution is thrown, they magically find a way to restart the car and drive around to the pits.
I just propose that if a car stops on the track and is not in danger I would let the car sit there for 2 laps before throwing the caution. If it is a mechanical failure or out of fuel, who cares? The car with the mechanical failure is most likely out of the race anyway.

The car getting hit by a spinning car traveling at any speed, let alone at a fast speed, might care just a bit. Spinning or wrecking cars don't stay in the racing lane.

I don't see a problem with a caution for that banner. If that thing ripped off onto a windshield it'd be a disaster

They could just drive like Ace Ventura...

Damn. Windshield obstructions could be deadly

Whoa to the driver suffering a blown back hood. Luckily, it’s never happened.

Going to be mentioning that in this weeks fan council survey

Is that sarcasm? I hope so, because that has happened multiple times. Most recently it happened to Hamlin at Indy either this past year or 2 years ago.

Nascar always throws weird cautions like this. Tune em out guys, and just enjoy the racing when it happens. It doesn't HAVE to be a buzzkill

I don't think it is a matter of having weird cautions more than it is about consistency. One week a jack is being dragged around a super speedway and it is no problem and the next week a flapping banner necessitates a caution period. There was a time when caution flags were rarely and issue and it has only been fairly recently Nascar, due to a variety of reasons, has made them an issue.

Nah, as a long time and passionate fan of the sport I find race manipulation to be disgusting, and these days I usually shut the TV off and forget about Nascar until the next Sunday after 1 or 2 Brian France yellows. Jimmie Johnson was possibly finished after contact with the 11, and immediately he's gifted a yellow due to a flapping banner. Please.... This is so vanilla and boring at this point I enjoy seeing empty stands and dead in the water TV ratings for these clowns.

I have done the same thing after bogus cautions as some of them I can't stomach or abide by. I sure as heck can't throw my arms up in the air and and say "Oh well Nascar throws weird cautions and I just have to accept it."

Please explain to me why the race needed to be stopped (as Danica was getting lapped) for this piece of metal against the wall in the middle of the corner at Martinsville, where nobody would EVER touch it unless they were into the wall themselves (which would bring out a legit caution).

This is QUINTESSENTIAL Brian France Nascar. Jimmie Johnson's race and season is in dire straights, and the yellow comes out for A HALFWAY TORN GOODY'S BANNER. Laughing OUT FRIEKEN LOUD at this manly southern rough n' tumble sport. A TORN ADVERTISEMENT BROUGHT OUT A YELLOW AT MARTINSVILLE>

Eh, ratings and seatings are variables which don't effect me. It's not perfect, there's manipulation like there is in EVERY major sport.

Of couse there are issues in the sport, significant ones at that, but I really try to not get angry over it, I see absolutely no point. I can't change these issues and I cant imagine abandoning a sport I've become enmeshed in since I was a kid.

Just as I find fun and joy out of watching the super star street ball circus that is the NBA, I find fun from watching NASCAR and the racing that does occur. There's passion in fans but this is more of an issue of ALL of sports in general. It's more about commercialism and marketing sport than it is exclusively "NASCAR is screwing up", I believe.

Nascar is just trying to keep up with the world. Coincidentally, the sanctioning body is commanded by people who can't adapt their product to this crazy world of media.

To compare the manipulations in Nascar to the other major sports, you would have to equate phony cautions in Nascar with the NFL purposely flagging a team until they caught up on the scoreboard, or blatantly resetting the scores late in the game altogether. If that's going on, I wouldn't know because I lost interest in football when I was a teenager.

As long as Kyle is still driving I'll tune in, but the product is pure trash right now. A caution at Martinsville for a torn banner..... What a disgrace!

The NHL adopted gimmicks to decide games that ended in ties several years ago and they have become even more gimmicky over time. My solution to that is to turn off the game after regulation and view the outcome of the game as a tie. I get where you are coming from in terms of Nascar and being a fan and I think most of the remaining fans have your mindset. No amount of bogus cautions, caution clocks, crazy rules and constant rules changes or illegitimate championship lotteries are going to make you stop watching as no matter what there is always something redeeming enough for you.

That, and they were also going 80-100 mph slower this week.

I would really appreciate someone in the media, a fan on these boards or Nascar itself to explain the blatant incongruities we see week in and week out. Let's say I am over at my friend Ted's house watching the Dega race and I ask him why Nascar didn't throw a caution for the wedged jack and he tells me that it is not causing a problem and until it does cause a problem there will be no caution.

I enjoyed Ted's hospitality so much I went back to his house and watched the Martinsville race and I asked him why a flapping banner would trigger a caution seeing it was not causing any problems. He told me that I was correct but even though the banner was not causing any problems the possibility was that it could have so Nascar was proactive and wise to throw the yellow.

Well it is a dangerous sport and anything could happen, but I think it would actually lower the number of cars that stop on the track because the penalty for stopping would be bigger than the penalty for driving around to the pits. Right now, since the caution is thrown immediately, the penalty for stopping on the track (one lap down) is less than the penalty for driving around to the pits (several laps down), so there is an incentive to park the car on the front straight to draw the caution.
