NASCAR officials on Saturday told Naples-based Arnold Motorsports that it would have to remove the logos of its primary sponsor, Redneckjunk.com, from Derrike Cope's No. 50 Dodge.

NASCAR said through spokesperson Herb Branham: "We just didn't feel like that projected the proper image of our sport."

Redneckjunk.com sells used sporting goods and auto parts.

NASCAR has become increasingly image-conscious as it attempts to broaden its demographic reach beyond the Southeast. Three cars will start today's Nextel Cup race sponsored by beer companies, however, including Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 8 Chevrolet, which also bears advertising from a firearms company. Joe Ruttman's No. 09 Dodge is sponsored by a casino.

I remember when Rent-A-Wreck was once a sponsor.

I guess that was OK.

This is just a bunch of politically correct BS.

...it's ok folks! It's all ok...Bwian is in charge!...all will be well!!! LoL!

A sponsor is a sponser, I mean come on. PC crap alright.

B-b-b-b-but, it's ok to have ads like Viagra?????
And it's ok, during the race to have ads that offer assistance to those men and women
who have sexual dysfunction problems?????
I would much rather explain Redneck Junk to my grand daughter than the others. Wouldn't you???

Now, c'mon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What the hey????? Did France and Helton take that car ad personal?????

I'm with you all on this one. I am really not comfortable with several of the commercials and the way they glamorize alcoholism, extramarital sex, and the like. I am much less concerned with my kids seeing a redneck junk ad.

I realize that this is the real world and my kids will be exposed to things I wish they weren't. I also would rather them see this crap when I am around to help them understand them though too.

I do find it ammusing that NASCAR is concerned about their image when a company with small pockets comes calling. But, then the Budweiser's of the world are not a concern because they bring truckloads of cash to the sport.

Hypocritical at best :bslfag: at worst :(

Wasn't it a bunch of Rednecks that started NASCAR. Isn't the fan base of NASCAR considered to be made up of rednecks. Just listen to the John and Billy show every morning to hear the rednecks. NASCAR is getting to PC on us.

I thought the whole Na$ca$h thing started with bootlegging in Redneck land?

AND just check out the definition of REDNECK! The reason people were labled "rednecks" was because they toiled in the sun on their land and had sunburned necks!

I have always been a Junior Johnson fan, and he was a bootlegger that had tremendous success in racing. The people in charge are forgetting the past history of the sport.

Me too! AND just be as proud as I am when you post enough to be classified "BOOTLEGGER"!

NO !!!!!!! The whole thing did not start with bootlegging in redneck land.

That is a misnomer if there ever was one. The sport of auto racing in this country began in the midwest and documentation Henry Ford won an auto race as early as 1901, just like they say in the commercial.

When NASCAR was formed, Bill France was president and a native of Washington, DC. The vice-president from Jacksonville, Florida, the secretary from Hartford, Connecticut , the treasurer from Daytona Beach, Florida and the national commissioner from Indianapolis, Indiana.
In the early years of NASCAR existence, there was a nearly fifty- fifty split on the number of races held in north and western states as there were run in southeastern states.

The idea of racing showroom stock cars came about before WWII, but after the war, the shortage of new cars placed the idea on hold until the nation got back into a normal atmosphere, new cars became more plentiful, that racing factory showroom cars became reality.

Not to take anything away from the southeast region but the formation and success of NASCAR was the result of brainstorming from racing enthusiasts from different regions of this nation, and the early beginnings and popularity came not just from the south but from tracks all over the country.

True some of the drivers were moonshine runners, but that was not the foundation and impetus of the sport. It made for a good story and was perpetuated for the media.

There're even beer companies on several dominant cars, that's ok,but no "redneck" logos allowed? This is rediculous, not surprising since NASCAR's even handing out fines for certain language anymore and broadcasting radio calls on 7 minute delay so as able to monitor radio traffic. ;)
btw, when NASCAR barely has enough cars to fill the 43 car fields lately, being this choosy over which sponsors are allowed into the sport is not a good omen for the future,if NASCAR plans to continue feilding 43 car fields IMHO ;)
Perhaps a mutiny is in order? j/k :D

So, I think what you're trying to say is that NASCAR (gasp) lied to us in order to maximize profit? Say it isn't so! Next you'll be saying that there really is no tooth fairy.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Unfortunately they're still the majority of people who attend the races (atleast the races I go to see).

The demographics change with the venue. A race held in Charlotte will host a larger number of fans from the southeast whereas a race held at Pocono or Chicago will host a larger number of fans from that area. The exception might be Daytona when fans from all over the globe attend and the majority hard to determine.

The fan base is no longer in the southeast and has spread all over the world. Think about where you attend races and who you choose to sit and converse with. If your only contact at the race are friends from the southern states who sit together, the impression becomes, the majority of fans are southern rednecks.

This thread began as a result of NASCAR throwing out the sponsorship of Redneck.com. but in this instance, they are wrong.

It seems the reason for the decision is to dispel the belief southern rednecks are the main fans of the sport in an effort to make NASCAR NEXTEL Racing look mainstream and credible.
This choice does more harm than good.

Does the Major Redneck Sport have to be politically correct? Thats going too far.

As far as redneckjunk.com goes, I think if I stay on that site too long, my household might go bankrupt
