NASCAR introduces rules changes for Chase - NASCAR MOBILE http://www.nascar.com/en_us/news-media/articles/2016/9/14/nascar-rule-change-2016-chase.html

"The changes allow NASCAR officials to strip race-winning teams of the benefits associated with a Chase victory, which include the automatic advancement into the next elimination round and any tiebreaker implications, should those teams fail the post-race lug-nut check or the post-race Laser Inspection Station (LIS) platform."

About time the cheaters have a penalty worth looking at. Now I would like to see the laser inspection results from before and after the race.

So does this say you keep the points from the victory but lose the automatic advancement? Wouldn't a points penalty be important too?

Also, they should have been stripping these teams of the chase bonus points that are awarded for regular season wins, but they missed the boat on that one.
I think this is upping the ante for the post race celebration where drivers sometimes damage their cars (and possibly hide infractions).

I don't care what individual actions may have driven this, or if it was a combined reaction to a number of incidents. Regardless, it's about frickin' time they put some teeth in these penalties. Points don't mean as much under the Chase system as they did before 2004, esp. once a team gets that win under its belt.

Look at Truex. The #78 was hit for 10 points after Richmond. Effect on team: absolutely none, since the points were immediately reset for the Chase. Hell, many fantasy leagues pass penalties on to the players; they paid more of a penalty than the driver!

Now apply the same rules to 'regular season' races. If you win but are penalized, no Chase for you.

This rule is just window dressing as there are already rules on the books that could address this issue. Maybe Nascar leadership is getting a little worried about using the catch all "actions detrimental to stock car racing" as Brian France and his minions are the worst offenders.

This is going to bite someone in the @$$ at a critical moment and everyone on here will howl.

If someone loses the championship for a loose lugnut, it'll be ridiculous. I like Tony Stewart, but I kinda feel like it would be poetic justice for this to come back to haunt him. It was nice to see NASCAR allowing a little more freedom for the teams.

According to the linked article, the new penalties start with 17 or fewer lug nuts in place. So an accidental loose nut would not trigger this. To be missing 4 or more lug nuts, it is safe to say it was intentional.

Hopefully we can get some bad ass lug nut checks like we did during the All Star race. Some stobe lights, dramatic drum rolls, and some boogity boogity bling during those inspections would be fitting the chase races.
Maybe we should go ahead and require the final four to drift the corners after hitting the track from a 300 foot helicopter drop.

Are these penalties only for lugnut infractions?

NASCAR needs to start taking wins away for real penalties. Until they do that, penalties mean nothing. Especially in XFINITY and Trucks where Cup drivers can cheat and win and face literally no penalty.

I rarely criticize NASCAR, but this is the dumbest ass thing I have ever seen. You really want this? Really? Hope to God that the NASCAR official in charge of accidentally kicking the laser does his job. I cannot think of one win anybody has that pisses me off because a team cheated. Why, then, is this an issue now? Freakin' mistake, but I am optimistic that teams will be careful and lasers will be bumped to ensure that this is not settled at 4 a.m. the day after Homestead.

I'll guess that chase teams will back away from the static edge of pre-race rear-steer settings and everybody will pass post-race.

Just my opinion, of course.

If you pass the pre race laser inspection and go on track and have a little gentlemanly like rubbin' is racin' contact how the hell can anyone expect a car to return and pass the laser inspection after the race???
I'd say only idiots would dream that up and then remembered we're talking about nascar..

The infractions have all been rear-steer related and not every car out there hits something.

Teams fail primarily because they're pushing the envelope.

I think it is designed to stop teams from making adjustments AFTER the car has past the pre-race inspection. If your car is so close to the line, I suggest you forgo any victory burn outs that could change your set up.
I am all in favor of this rule.

Not a fan. If you pass the pre-race inspection and are out of tolerance after the race then good for you. Or maybe even bad for you. This is really starting to get ridiculous.

What happened to my sport?
Why? Why? Why?
