It just came to mind about racing movies after I saw an ad about Talledega Nights with Will Ferrell next weekend, I have never seen that movie since I'm not a big Ferrell fan but I'll probably watch it. There are a few decent racing movies out there but probably more than I know about, I remember Days of Thunder, Grand Prix and Le Mans and then there's some really bad flicks like Driven.

Are there others?

I actually kind of like driven. Gina Gershon.... Yum

I like Senna movie lots of great footage. I do question the Senna/Prost angle. I know they were fierce rivals and that Prost could be a jerk.
But there was probably more give and take, and it probably wasn't as black and white as presented.
You have to know it was a Senna story, almost a tribute.
I think the Prost legacy was tarnished more than needed.

Prost had a great career and is one of the all time greats, he just got over shadowed by Senna. It was an incredible era, there was Senna, Mansell, Prost, and Piquet. The cars were less limited or more of a beast as well.
I just think the line between Senna and Prost are thinner than most want to believe.

Senna is a romantic figure, flashy, controversial, fast, raw, and he paid the ultimate price. The things that warrant the prestige and he has impressed legions, many that place him as the best ever. While Prost the lesser was dry, technical, unromantic the type not to over inspire.
But at the end of the day he was an incredible driver easily among the top ten greats, debatably among the top five.
I guess the Senna documentary satisfies the intent, but I would liked to seen the whole story.

You would have to be a fan of Nascar and Will Ferrell before you like this movie. Remember its a comedy.

the more i watched it the more I liked it. I hated it the first time I seen it.

+1

Thought his Dad played the best part, and still do. But, after a couple more viewings, it all clicked.

i get very little enjoyment out of most racing movies, simply because of the hollywood twist. but as mentioned by Zerkfitting and Greg, "Grand Prix" and "Senna" stand out in my mind.

I forgot about Gumball Rally, see that movie if you like Cannonball Run movies. And Mad Mad Mad World (Rat Race is based on that).

I'm a huge Senna fan, grew up watching him in the 80's, Senna and Prost were good friends off the track but on the track was a different story, Prost became too political and Senna went on with life as usual. You should see the friendship Senna and Berger had, they were like 2 kids in elementry school sometimes. Senna was a very aggressive racer and every single driver that raced with him acknowledged that as well as the skill he had, when Senna had something to complain about to the FIA, many of the drivers took his side, Mansell always helped Senna out and liked him quite a bit.

During Senna's funeral, Prost was the front bearer while carrying the coffin- he was Senna's worst enemy yet best friend.

I have Senna on DVD, great documentary with such a sad ending. Look for the book Senna Versus Prost, interesting story too.

I watched Grand Prix recently and the sound is incredible. They recorded engine/shifting in the real race cars running the tracks.
Grand Prix is a phenominal footage film, the plot was so bland and boring but the actual race footage was top notch, they used actual Formula 2 cars with the BRM Formula 1 engine sounds dubbed, amazing footage though.

I took my mom to see it. We both lost our minds at the end when they are wrecking and Bill Webber says "Lets cut to a commercial" who ever came up with that line was pure genius. Must have been a Nascar fan to get that joke as we were the only ones in the theater laughing.

Not an official sanctioned race but "32 hours 7 minutes" is a good watch.

It's one of those movies you must see more than once to "get it" you miss too much the first time:)

I like Six Pack, Stroker Ace, & Days Of Thunder. Never really thought of Talladega nights as a racing movie. There was a movie by James Garner long ago that was pretty good. I'd like to see this IndyCar movie I keep hearing about that Paul Newman made back in the late 60's, I heard it's really good. As far as Driven, i'd have to say that was THE WORST of all the racing movies i've seen to date...

Ah yes Stroker Ace, Clyde Torkel and the "fastest chicken in the south". saw it several times.

I liked Niki Lauda back in the days, he's in my top 10 great all time race drivers so I'm eager to see Rush.

Nice list of movies mentioned here, gonna start doing a search for some of them, I think I may have seen Heart like a Wheel and RAD before, probably the Richard Petty story but I'll probably watch it again.

I also like watching racing documentary, I recently watched Truth in 24 just before the 24H LeMan and wasn't surprised that Audi won once again despite the problems they had.

The Ride of Their Lives - great documentary.

"3 Weeks to Daytona" is actually a good little movie. Very low budget - worse special effects than Sharknado but an excellent movie that really captures what the racing life is like. Good plot and good acting.

What was the name of the bad Indy Car movie with Sylvester Stallone that came out about 10 or 11 years ago?

The only thing I found a little far fetched is the man-hole covers. They'd fly higher than that..... Don't you think?

Much higher.

They actually had problems with the manhole covers coming loose during practice ahead of the first IndyCar race at Baltimore. None of them flew off though.

Driven was not just one of the worst racing movies I've ever seen, but one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
