2018 F1 News Thread

Haas has unveiled the VF-18:

Williams is unveiling their car tomorrow.

Solid black, I like it.

I like how it's not the primary color but you can still see it pop out.

Good lord, F1 cars are freaking hideous. How many different flicks, elements, winglets can you have?

The RB14:

Its a test livery, but damn they should keep it for a full season. The car really stands out with the digital camo.

I still can't help but think these cars are monstrosities. Big, ugly, tacky.

I've warmed up to the design, I think they look quite good.

Its just that damn halo, no matter the paint pallet... It looks like a massive thong, its crazy how bad it looks.

Ferrari creep towards Mercedes with a longer wheelbase and get very, uh, creative in the front of the sidepods.

For me these designs and schemes resemble when a musical artist has pushed themselves furthest into a "this is who I am now" experimental phase, right before they inevitably go "back to their roots".

I think the McLaren scheme is a nice clean look and good color combination. All of the others are too busy or are not improvements.

I do like the video editing and constant uploads to YT, it makes F1 seem a bit more lively and accessible.
Probably Liberty's biggest contribution so far. F1 were stuck in the Stone Age with Bernie. Minimal social media presence...Bernie literally said we don't need young fans. o_O

The front spoiler wings remind me of bi-planes that had extra wings added.

The mid-pack teams are complaining that the Haas cars are too similar to the 2017 Ferrari chassis.

Haas weren't faster than Red Bull. Otmar whateverhisnameis is making up a fairy tale there. Haas were outqualified by Red Bull by over a second. They just couldn't pass Haas because of 1) aero and 2) Albert Park.

The rest reads like a bunch of whingy **** to me. You shouldn't need hundreds upon hundred upon hundreds of employees and hundreds of millions of Euros just to finish 4th in the WCC. What they're doing is allowable within the rules and if they dislike it and tighten the regulations they can look forward to another couple of teams (Force India are on the brink) leaving the grid and we can watch a little over a dozen cars zoom around their giant Tilkedromes.

****, F1 has a history of literal customer cars. Get over it.

Actually I believe the complaints are really about the Hass not being ugly enough.

Haas weren't faster than Red Bull......... Haas were outqualified by Red Bull by over a second.

That and Ricciardo had the fastest lap of the race, so I don't think they are hurting for speed. Just yesterday on RACER , Horner was saying Renault is still holding them back, while they were setting the race's fastest lap, that is.

Granted, Mercedes has their magic qualifying happy mode, but in race trim the Red Bull seemed to be right there.

Honestly, I don't have even the foggiest notion what Renault gets out of supplying Red Bull. All they have done for the last four seasons is complain that every problem it has revolves around the Reggie.

They just couldn't pass Haas because of 1) aero and 2) Albert Park.

I'm willing to bet it's all aero. If you put Indycars down there they would have a jolly good race. If you count the hard braking zones at Albert Park, it's something like five or six, and not a lot of tracks have five or six corners where you have to throw the anchor out like that.

The rest reads like a bunch of whingy sh!t to me.

Red Bull gives you whine!

What they're doing is allowable within the rules and if they dislike it..............

The big problem is that Haas is an American team. We can't have them doing any winning. That, and their cars isn't ugly enough.

Yeah you're right. Albert Park is pretty tight and narrow but it's not Monaco. The Supercars races there weren't bad.

I've always found Horner to be an insufferable a**hole. The second Red Bull show pace again it'll be a TAG Heuer PU. Then when they drop to Mercedes and Ferrari again it'll revert to being a Renault.

In 2014 they were openly hating each other and Red Bull actually terminated their contract with Renault because they thought they had a Mercedes deal. I am not sure how they got Renault to take them back (probably under duress from the FIA), but the motors were branded Tags. Now there is some sort of Aston Martin badging on the cars, but don't ask me how that works. They could be Yugos next week for all I know. Add to that all the trash talk back and forth with Torro Rosso last year I can't see a reason in the world either would want anything to do with the other. Seems like the Reggie and Red Bull are just stuck with each other because it's sure not friendly.

I would not do business with Red Bull simply because of the way they threw Renault under the bus, and I wouldn't do business with Renault simply because every time I have dealt with the French I was sorry I ever got involved. Either one of those companies would be pure misery to deal with and I can't imagine how they have dealt with each other this long.

The biggest "innovation" of the new F1 era has been Force India carving a couple of holes in their nose. Check any pictures of the 70's F1 cars and you can see every car on the grid looks different. I'm betting if you painted all the cars white no one could tell the difference between today' cars. There are so many nips, tucks, widgets, wingies and wolly bobbles tacked onto these monstrosities that the mind simply can't remember it all.

I know it might seem snively to complain about something as petty as aesthetics, but I don't think anyone actually likes these new cars, or thinks they are pretty. F1 seems oblivious to this and instead clings to their bogus "technology" image. Just give us a decent looking car that, above all, races well. It was not that hard for Indycar to deliver that.

I like the turbo V6 engines though.

The cars are producing more turbulence than the previous winglet crazed years between 05 to 08. Everyone is talking about the noise, honestly you don't need a V12, 10, or 8 IMHO. The current V6 without all of the "tech" bits would be great. They sound better than ever this year IMHO.

I don’t give a **** what power unit they run either. But the idea that F1 needs to be "road relevant" while everyone's whining about the power units and making them simpler and cheaper in the next regulations while simultaneously chasing lap records with wicked aero developments than can only be rivaled by the 2008 cars is absurd. Ain't a thing that's road relevant about tacking on a bunch of bits to make the car a few seconds faster. Waste of money that could just as easily be spent on, you know, engines.

Don't expect anything substantial to change any time soon.
https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/fia-calls-urgent-meeting-to-discuss-overtaking-1022018/
The gathering has been put together at short notice because, with a push being made to get things changed for 2019, in theory rule changes for next season have to be confirmed by the FIA before April 30th.

Up until that date, majority support is needed for tweaks to the rules, while from the start of May any subsequent changes would have to be passed unanimously by the teams, so would be more difficult to achieve.

The rear proposal is simply for a bigger rear wing flap, which would create a bigger effect when DRS is employed. However, that does not address the fundamental issue of the current high downforce cars being unable to follow each other.

The Sommerville idea is to improve the quality of the airflow onto the car behind by simplifying the front wing. That would involve the removal of certain elements that are specifically designed to control the airflow around the front wheels.

It's this flow – that starts with the front wing of the car ahead and interacts with the turbulence around the front wheels – that subsequently makes it difficult for the car behind to follow. Removing the elements would slow the lead car slightly, and allow the following car to get closer.

It's understood both ideas could be incorporated into the 2019 rules.

The rear wing concept is just terrible, awful, you name it so I'm not at all surprised it's the FIA's idea.
