Cayuga ARCA RE/MAX Series Race Cancelled

TOLEDO, OH (5-27-09) - Officials of the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) and Cayuga Motor Speedway today announced that the ARCA RE/MAX Series race scheduled for June 28 at Cayuga, has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

"We looked forward to building on the 2008 RE/MAX Series event we established at Cayuga, but we've determined that pressing on for 2009 is not in the best interests of the series," said ARCA President Ron Drager. "We wish Jerry Santucci and Cayuga well going forward."

It marks the first time since 1998 that an event on ARCA's 57-year-old national tour was taken off the schedule under such circumstances.

"We at Cayuga Motor Speedway accept responsibility for this unfortunate circumstance," said track President Jerry Santucci. "ARCA is a first class racing organization and we regret the inconvenience this causes the series, its teams, sponsors and fans. We worked diligently, but as deadlines approached it became increasingly apparent we would not be able to promote and conduct the event successfully due to issues within our ownership group."

Sorry Nostradumbass, I know you were looking forward to the race.

I can't imagine there being a lot of happy teams and drivers right now.

I called it, that really sucks though. I was really looking forward to it and i'm sure a lot of fans in the area were too. Especially with both Canadian Tire Series races at Cayuga being canceled this year. I hope all the teams and fans can get refunds on hotel reservations. Always hate to have a shorter series this year too, just like NASCAR East.

It's a shame, I went to two of their events and they put on great shows(except the lights kept going out at the Canadian Tire Series race!). A lot of the tracks sponsors were also sponsors of the Canadian Tire Series and/or Canadian Tire Series teams. Maybe when the Canadian Tire Series left so did the sponsors. The Canadian Tire Series race I went to at Cayuga last year definitely drew a much larger crowd than the ARCA race.

Well I cant imagine too many teams being upset about this. This race was nothing anybody that I know was looking forward to. I have talked to a few
already and I have not heard ANY negative response.

If I remember right the race cancelled in 1998 was West Virginia Motor Speedway. In 2000 a race at Shady Bowl was cancelled and neverr was made up. Teams where already on the grounds and per the "promoters option" as we where told it was cancelled due to a chance of rain. It never rained the rest of the day or that evening. ARCA had a race the previous night at Toledo. Driver Scott Baker lost his life in that race.

Well I hope none of them got hotel rooms reserved through priceline or something similar. I don't think they can get their money back then.

Yeah I forgot about Terry Jones. Toledo is in his backyard....

Yeah but Cayuga was too. Anyway, I hope ARCA goes back to Ontario next year although I doubt they will. I think Delaware would be good since they are fixing the track and ARCA trucks recently went there. Mosport might be good too.

Still waiting for them to race at Langley...

Santucci better just sell Cayuga because he just pissed off ARCA, IMSA, OSCAAR and possibly NASCAR(for some reason they canceled their 2 Canadian Tire Series events there for this year even though Cayuga had them listed on the site earlier this year). No big sanction is ever going to trust him again so Cayuga won't ever run again if he doesn't sell it. It is too bad, I think Cayuga is the largest oval in Canada at 5/8 mile. It would be a shame if it is just done.

Unfortunately, I don't see ARCA adding any new tracks unless they're bigger than a mile.

Well they did add Cayuga last year and Nashville, then Mansfield this year so they have been adding them lately. I really like it when a series does a big change up in the schedule. I thought last years schedule was great with the 3 new additions(Cayuga, Rockingham, NJ Motorsport park).

Rockingham and NJMP were great additions. I wish they weren't running NJ the same weekend as Richmond. It's going to be damn near impossible to get to both (hard as I will try). I'm pretty much getting pushed in to going to Richmond now that I dropped ODS (owner wants to sell the track, well, eff him).

Yeah, it really sucks when good races conflict.

Screw that, I still get a weekend in Port Dover Trust me, it doesn't suck there. Not that I couldn't cancel the reservations right now if I wanted to. I really did think they would move the race to Delaware though, never expected a complete cancellation.

Word on the street is that there is a buyer with capital ready to pull the trigger on this track.

Thats good you are going to make the best of it. Hopefully you can make it to some other good races. I don't know about races in NY, but there is a ton of other great racing in southern Ontario. World of Outlaws, Canadian Tire Series, good stuff.

What a joke that this track has been since about December. Why did they keep making the BS promises constantly. They knew it wasn't happening, it was so obvious. I guess Santucci was hoping for some miracle to happen so he could pull it off. Instead he screwed over ARCA, the Teams and fans, very selfish. Maybe if he would've let ARCA know they could have rescheduled it, maybe even help out another Canadian track. It is exactly 1 month from today til when the Cayuga race was scheduled. It is a good thing for NASCAR that they had this guy figured out before they released the Canadian Tire Series schedule. What a jerk.

Maybe if World of Outlaws would race on a weekend around here! Maybe I'll look into the Pocono August race. Plenty o' local tracks around here, and I'm really more of a dirt guy.

Yep, I'll say NASCAR had Santucci figured out. ARCA should have known to pull the plug when the Canadian Tire Series blew him off, and there would have been time to line up a replacement. I'm sure the track will go dark for '09, I doubt they're going to be able to bring in any of those minor series now. And OSCAAR was scheduled for ARCA weekend, I guess that's off.

I am surprised with how NASCAR wants to keep expanding to other areas that they havent pressured the Golden Horseshoe area of Ontario to build a NASCAR calibre track.

Oh, I've heard some rumors over the years, but nothing too serious. Certainly is a huge market, eh? I used to hear 1/3 of the population of Canada lived there, don't know if that's true any more.

About 1/4 of Canadians live in the Golden Horseshoe. Canada is a whole lot of wasted space.

I just looked it up, and correct, about 8,000,000 people, or 1/4 the population of Canada, lives in the Golden Horseshoe. Throw in Vancouver and Montreal, and the whole country is a vast arctic tundra wasteland. Canadians are whacked, man. If the area was so great, why aren't there 8,000,000 people in Buffalo? Which is where I'm from, I'm not Canadian. Ya' gotta love Buffalo, by the way. High of 58 (although bright and sunny) on May 31st. I completely froze my ass off at the local 1/2 mile asphalt oval on Saturday night.

Buffalo was listed as one of the most desirable cities to move to in the country not to long ago IIRC.

Desireable for about 6 weeks in July and August when it's sunny and 75 degrees with 10% humidity. That's about it. Well, I guess the cost of living is pretty low, too.

But hey, on Topic. The "announcement" about the Cayuga race being cancelled no longer appears in the news section of the ARCA website. And of course it's off the schedule on the website. What do you mean Cayuga race? There never was any such thing as a Cayuga race.

Yeah you're right, you can't even find it by clicking the more recent news button at the bottom. Usually the stuff they want to get burried is there. Very strange, they didn't leave it up long enough to get the word out. Stupid Cayugas site still says "Our new website is coming soon!"

If they fixed the place up a bit and added more seating I think they could hold a NASCAR truck race. What a waste to just let the place sit there and do nothing.

Hmm. I'll bet they have Cayuga listed on the back of those ARCA T-shirts they sell at all the races. And They probably have refrigerator schedule magnets? :D

Yep i'm sure they do. They probably also have Music City Motorplex on everything too.

The owner better sell that track. ARCA's pissed off, the teams pissed off and the drivers are pissed off.

And now, another series has canceled their events there. http://insidetracknews.blogspot.com/2009/06/sst-racing-series-cancels-events-at.html

Yup. ARCA was to be Cayuga's main attraction for 2009, after NCATS blew them off. I figured there was a zero chance of any of the other minor series coming in. Cayuga will surely be dark in 2009.

Just saw those SST Modifieds Saturday night. Just the regular feature at one of the participating tracks though, not the "tour" that Cayuga was supposed to host. Hopefully some of the other tracks can squeeze in what was to be the Cayuga dates on their schedule. Tell the 4 cylinders they have no racing that weekend. :D

Cayuga is too nice of a track to just be sitting there doing nothing. Hopefully somebody will get it going again next year. Too bad ARCA will probably never give that place another chance, even if they get another owner. Even if they don't have a bad relationship with NASCAR I doubt they could get another Canadian Tire Series race. The only track on the Canadian Tire Series schedule that has more than 1 event this year is St-Eustache and they definately get the best crowds of any of the Canadian Tire Series tracks i've been to so I think they'll be keeping both races.

I agree with that -- that ARCA won't give them another chance. They gave them two chances. Last year's crowd was dismal.

ARCA lost a lot of money, and a lot of teams lost a lot of money in this. I'd like to see a Canada race, but maybe they should consider Delaware.

Well it is kind of hard to determine how good the crowd would have been if it had not been a rainy day. It started raining during the autograph session and i think it had also rained earlier that day and also a bit on the day before(qualifying day). I doubt they would have had a great crowd, but i'm sure the rain made at least a few people decide to stay home. I think they should definitely consider Delaware, good size track, ARCA already has ran there recently(with the trucks), and they just recently fixed the place up a bit for the Canadian Tire Series. I think the Mosport road coarse could be good too, if they want another road coarse race on the schedule(i'm guessing they think 1 is plenty though).

Now that's interesting. The 2008 Photo Gallery of ARCA at Cayuga on InsideTrack.com has been deleted! I posted the link (best I could at the time with under 15 posts) in the Mansfield thread. It had a couple of good crowd shots from the infield. Anyways, Cayuga seats 12,000, and I'm guessing 4,000 in attendence at best, probably less. And no way in heck were there more than 500 for qualifying and the Truck race on Saturday. Rain was on again, off again all weekend, but I don't think day of race sales would have been substantially higher with nice weather.

Oh well, I've never been there, but I vote for Delaware too. I'd go there with advance notice. I'm still kind of surprised they couldn't pull off moving this years race there.
