NAPA Leaves MWR

Yeah ouch is right. It's a big blow. Looks like Peak and Aaron's will stay but now MWR needs to sell to another big sponsor or their third team is ******.

Wow, terrible news for MWR and all the people that work there. But bad news for Nascar in general.
How many murderers, dog-torturers, and wife-beaters has the NFL had? But the NFL sponsors never leave.
NAPA's willingness to do this might be say more about the finances of Nascar than NAPA's morality.
The media storm had already blown over. And never really got that big. Reality is ESPN and mainstream news barely covered it. A few stories for a few days.

NBA had a ref busted for point-shaving and betting and ... no sponsors left. NBA had players leave the court and beat up fans and ... no sponsors left. A few % of NFL players get arrested every single year, like clockwork, for something violent or reckless. Every season has the same story of, guess how many players got arrested for drugs, DUI, fighting, wife-beating, etc in the off-season.

MLB has had huge steroids and PED cheating scandals for the past 15 years. Sponsors stayed.
UFC has a guy get caught cheating every couple fights it seems. Sponsors stayed.
NFL has players admitting half the league is on HGH, which NFL doesn't test for.Sponsors stayed.

I understand the sponsor is more central in Nascar. But other sports have put up with media storms 10-100x greater than what Nascar just endured. It was a lot for Nascar, but nothing compared to what the NFL, MLB, or NBA deals with.
I'm sure NAPA will continue to stay in the sport at some level.

In other sports athletes make loads of money off of endorsements and if they screw up they DO often get their contracts terminated. Look at Tiger Woods after the sex scandal. Lost Gatorade, AT&T, and some others I can't think of at the moment. Nike and Rawlings left Michael Vick after the dog fighting case, Michael Phelps lost Kellogg's after the bong photos, etc.

Lets not forget the MWR attempt to DEFRAUD NAPA of the multi-million $ bonus clause in the contract. Winning a place in the CHASE has a $1-3 million dollar bonus for most all top-tier teams. Their attempt to manipulate the race finish was FRAUDULANT. Had MWR not got caught, they were in line to receive that bonus from NAPA................

Tiger Woods still gets $65M/yr in endorsements -- the most in the world.

And if Truex had gotten in the Chase and never taken out, NAPA would have gotten all the extra exposure of having a car in the chase. How is that fraud? They would have paid extra to have a car in the Chase and gotten it.

If they can't land sponsorship for the third team, Martin better hope the 78 is still open.. Maybe Barney is making the call now.

Michael Waltrip statement, re: losing NAPA ->

“NAPA has been with me from winning two Daytona 500s, to missing races with a new start-up team, and back to victory lane again. The relationship grew far past that of just a sponsor, but more of a partner and a friend. We will not be racing a NAPA car in 2014, but I have friendships that will last a lifetime.

“To the fans and those who made their voice heard through social media, as the owner, I am responsible for all actions of MWR. I sincerely apologize for the role our team played and for the lines NASCAR has ruled were crossed by our actions at Richmond. NASCAR met with the competitors in Chicago and we all know how we are expected to race forward.”

MWR didn't do anything that every other team hasn't done. Dale Jr, Nascar's most popular and endorsement-rich star, publicly admitted on several occasions to doing the exact same thing Bowyer did.

NAPA was, most likely, looking to exit the MWR deal anyway and this was a good excuse.
This is about $ and finances and not morality.

Get it right if you are going to say it. He did it once @ Bristol. I was there and heard him over the radio. That was the one and only one occasion. It was also not to manipulate a race for the benefit of a teammate or change the outcome of the Chase lineup.

Learn to read. He publicly admitted on "several times". Including several times this past week alone.

You've got it twisted, man. What MWR was wrong in every way. NAPA took some serious heat over this and they want out.

I don't think Napa cares that other teams have wrecked on purpose. Its a tough decision but MWR made their own bed. its a different time, gotta pay the consequences.

HOLY COW! That is a huge deal in itself. Man, they really have been busted on all fronts.

It wasn't the exact same thing. Jr did it in the middle of a race. It didn't rob another team of a win.

Very misleading way to word one act by Jr.

MW isnt a favorite of mine, but this awful news I hate to see the trainwreck.NAPA could have just pulled the plug as well, without issuing a condemnation.

I has a friend that owned an ran a NAPA store for years and I gave them a lot of buisness about 20 years worth. I spent tens of thousand of my dollars on parts and machine shop work over the years there. I even set them up as a parts and tools vender were I used to work.
I think less of NAPA today than I did yesterday, and the Truax singing commercial suck too.

If they dont shop themselves and Truax to FRR they will just be a fair weather P.O.S imo.

MWR had already been sufficiently penalized imo. And why the world is on its high horse Nascar deserves the heat to. They allowed the culture to exsist prior and only became pious about the problem after it was becoming nationally reported joke.
Michael is Nascars child they made him, and there are plenty of others that are ethically compromised as well, only slicker.

To hell with NAPA

This is on MWR. Napa doesn't owe anything to MWR or its employees. They've been loyal to Michael for 12 years; (A guy who btw sucked as a driver so it wasn't about winning for Napa) If MWR doesn't try to fix a race, their is no issue.

Napa will land on their feet. MWR may or may not. That is the point of pulling the plug on the money. This is the real penalty. Fining these multi car teams even 300 grand is a drop in the bucket. This is the way it should be and if there is more fall out then oh well. I have zero sympathy for Mikey.

Dig?

I wonder if MWR had released Ty Norris after the Richmond incident, NAPA would have stayed put.
If MW really didn't know anything about the Richmond trick, perhaps that would have been the thing to do.

In hindsight, MWR should have at least taken some kind of disciplinary action against Ty to try to defuse any potential sponsorship troubles.
