I see what you are saying and that makes since in principle, but I'm not convinced that's how they get paid this season. Is it a part of negotiations for future deals, probably, but I would expect the McDonalds, Columbia, etc dollars have already been agreed upon and most likely already paid for...

I've always thought of Hamlin as a low intelligence guy, but at the same time impressed with his ability to make money.

I've only been once to Watkins Glen but I would offer my standard advice...if it's your first time at the road course and you're on a budget, get a GA ticket and move around. If you find a spot you like stay there. If no budget, get a seat in a section that is a passing zone and walk the track...
