Fastest speed ever reached in a race?

I know Bill Elliott had the 212+ mph lap at Talladega, but could anyone tell me the fastest speed ever reached in a NASCAR race or practice session?

Also how fast can these things actually go unrestricted in 2016? I saw 214 at Michigan...but I'm sure they could reach higher speeds?
Thanks!

Keep the engine unrestricted and change the gearing to slow them down.
I would love to see the fools that try to use 850 HP coming off the corner only to hit the wall.

I know the open wheel qualifying re order is like 241 mph at Fontana

Wallace hit 228 at Talladega by himself (with hardly any testing for setups) with the first rendition of the CoT, which was less aerodynamic than the current bodies. I think with adequate testing and with a good team, 235+ is easily attainable in single car qualifying, with speeds potentially reaching 250 in the draft. That is NOT safe even with all of the current safety advancements. A race there at those speeds would be a bloodbath.

Don't know about fastest speed in a race but the fastest race was at Talladega in 1997. Average speed of 188.354 mph. Race that ran caution free.

Mark Martin beat Dale Earnhardt for the win. Just like he did in the 1990 Winston Cup Championship. :)

oh andy.....!!!

I see the question is, "in a race." Rusty wasn't in a race when he ran unrestricted and he wasn't in an official NASCAR practice session.
