What a shame.....unless they are adding a third race that is.

Hey! That's right in the middle of my parking space!

No crap, one year we actually did park about halfway between that gen and the black car. Sprint was trying to get our business at work and they gave the cell phone coordinator a luxury package. She called me and asked if I'd ever heard of the place. :):):)

I'm all for the Martsinville lights if they are 1) For insurance in case of delayed racing 2) for a third race run on a weekday. I'm not for just moving one of the Martinsville races to night time. The excitement of night racing wore off about the time 1/3 of the schedule became night racing.

I'm glad to see NASCAR's going back to more Sunday afternoon races. But, I have a feeling it will be short lived like standardized start times.

I wish they'd make the Charlotte fall race a daytime race again as well as these stupid Texas, Kansas and Kentucky races.

The irony is the one race that should be moved to primetime is run on a Sunday afternoon.

Even though we're in the Martinsville Thread I'm still going to guess that you're referring to Daytona here. I agree, Daytona should be a primetime event. I think the only reason it isn't is only because it would be placed into a much smaller window. At least with it's earlier scheduled start, they have the late afternoon/evening to run into should weather become an issue. Something they don't have the luxury of with the later start. Not if they want to retain the television audience.

If you were talking about moving Martinsville to a later start, at least move the spring date to a date closer to May/June. Sometime when the nighttime temps average in the 50's. Martinsville's nighttime temps for both their race weekends are in the 30's as an average. This ain't the NFL!

People are already complaining about obstructed views. NASCAR fans..... Gotta love em!
From this angle, it looks like the complaints may turn out to be justified. With the poles on the infield side, I don't see how they can't block something. I'll have to wait and see how many and how far apart the poles are.

That's not in the infield. It's outside the backstretch, adjacent to the luxury RV sites.

Unless one of those things is sitting directly in front of a seat, I don't see the big deal. It's not like blocking out the prime view of a backstretch with a bridge over the track.....Dover. Or, pillars in front the turn #4 seats..... Charlotte.

Heck, and if's that bad, move over a seat. There are plenty of those to go around.

If I had season tickets to a track that was undergoing a change I would try and look at any benefits and drawbacks but in most cases I wouldn't really know anything until I plunked down in my seat. Anyone who has ever been to the former Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego or the defunct Veterans Stadium in Philly can tell stories about obstructed views and they ain't pretty.

The biggest problems I have with obstructed views these days is because the networks focus on the top 5 and show meaningless angle shots or a glowing brake rotor for 3-4 laps.

Today's NASCAR broadcast's are a perfect example of a mostly unrealized obstructed view. You just don't know what you're missing sitting home on the couch.

What most all of tracks are missing is a big ass building right behind pit road.

Makes for an unparalleled race viewing experience.

I'm surprised you had time to post this, what with beating up the phone line to order your tickets. :D
I think you're thinking @AndyMarquisLive.

Me, I'm good with the two races that I already travel there for. That is until the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Time Remaining in Race, 'Race Clock' gets implemented. That'll free up a couple weekends for me.

Best news of the new year, 2017!!! Thanks to DPK for enlightening us on this announced improvement.

I've said it before but figure it never hurts to give credit where credit is due, but DPK and Allenbaba are the best to keeping us informed. Not that others don't or that they do not try, but these two posters are regular with up to date information and in some cases, speculation. Thanks to them both.

Martinsville to test lighting system: Martinsville Speedway will test its new LED lighting system on Wednesday. NASCAR's oldest venue, which celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2017, announced the project to illuminate the half-mile paperclip-shaped circuit last October. For track president Clay Campbell, whose grandfather H.Clay Earles founded Martinsville Speedway in 1947, the progress has been exciting to watch. "They put the last light pole up last week," Campbell told Motorsport.com. "They've got another month to do the wiring and focus all the individual lights. I think each light pole has about 19 or 20 lights on it, so each one has to be individually focused. We're doing a test this coming Wednesday with all the lights on the backstretch to start focusing those. It's pretty thrilling to see 'em coming up. They're pretty well on schedule so it will be ready shortly."(Motorsports)(1-25-2017)

Maybe it's just me but it looks like they need to turn up the volume on those lights a little bit.....

Then again, it's probably brighter than when Gordon got his last win there.

Let there be lights: Martinsville Speedway turns on its lights

Martinsville Speedway debuted its LED lights Thursday night, transforming the half-mile track.

“Today is truly a historic day in the history of Martinsville Speedway,” said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell in a statement. “This is a venue which has a long and storied past, but with these lights now in place, we’re looking forward to a bigger and better future – and certainly a brighter one.”

The lights will be used when the Cup races, which begin in the afternoon, stretch into the evening. The track is running its Late Model race, the ValleyStar Credit Union 300 on Sept. 23 under the lights. That will be the track’s first night race in its 70-year history.

The Cup Series races at Martinsville on April 2 and Oct. 29.
