So I have been reading a lot of articles on racer.com lately, and they talk about Fernando Alonso's Indy 500 run a few weeks ago. For those that might not know, this guy is an F1 driver that decided to ditch the F1 Monaco race and instead race in the Indy 500. (The Monaco race and indy 500 are on the same day, along with the Coke 600).

Anyway, the Europeans or open wheel drivers consider winning the F1 Championship, the 24 hours of LeMans, and the Indy 500 their "triple crown".

So what would be the American triple crown?
My thoughts are Daytona 500, Indy 500, and their respective championship, i.e. NASCAR or Indycar.
I would think a road race might be included somewhere but I don't know which one. Maybe the 24 hours of Daytona or 12 hours of Sebring?
What do you guys think?

Well, when bill Elliott won the million dollars, they were trying call Daytona, Talladega, Charlotte 600, and Darlington 500, a win 3 out of 4, and it was a triple crown.
NASCAR math.
I would go with Daytona, Indy, and Darlington.
Not the 600 unless you want to up the difficulty of the two wins in one day.
Road race, Sebring (?).

It all has to be done in one season or it really doesn't mean anything.

Nascar wants to be like stick and ball so I don't think something analogous to the ponies is worth doing.

If something like this were to happen IMS would have to come off the table as you can't have a race that is supposed to be prestigious where only 10% of the seats are occupied. The Daytona 500 has a nice crowd and since Talladega has halved its seating it looks full so those would be 2 tracks worth looking at. Darlington has a small capacity so it would work but Charlotte would need a lot more enhancing to hold a crown jewel race.

I think my final answer is going to be the Southern 500 (Without stages), Indy 500, and the NASCAR championship.

Daytona 500 is too much of a lottery anymore.
The Southern 500 without stages has to be one of the most mentally and physically challenging races.
The Indy 500 is a pretty solid race that anyone could win using a multitude of strategies.
The NASCAR championship because currently I think there is slightly more talent in NASCAR than indycar. That being said, the Indycar championship is a little more legit since the NASCAR championship is a small lottery right now. Also, NASCAR has more races and theoretically that would make it tougher to win the championship.

I would add the Daytona 500 to what the Europeans already have. Their triple crown has one race in America, why should ours have to have all the races here. Two Americans have won three out of those four. Mario Andretti has won Daytona, Indy, and a world championship. A.J.Foyt has won Daytona, Indy, and Le Mans. Things being what they are today, I can't see anyone winning three of those four, let alone all of them. You would be lucky if you could find someone that could win two of those four today.

I think this is a big reason why I love seeing some of the Cup drivers attempt the Indy 500. Larson, Kelowski, the Busch brothers, I even cheered for Danica. I would love to see more cross over between indycar and nascar and even IMSA. I think it is good for autoracing on all levels.

Since we are talking about NASCAR, it would be the Daytona 500,Coke 600,Southeren 500
