In the continuing death spiral of the American passenger car, Ford has announced that by 2020 the Mustang and a new Focus hatchback (which will more closely resemble a crossover) will be the only cars it will continue to produce. Everything else in their lineup will be either a truck or an SUV. This means it's the end of the line for the Fiesta, Fusion, Focus sedan, and Taurus. I didn't see it in the article, but this also likely means the Lincoln MKZ (which is based on the Fusion) is a goner.

It's hard to imagine Ford not making any sedans, as they have been doing so almost as long as the car has been in existence. I guess it's just a sign of the times.

Oh the drama
I think Ford is just reacting to the market trends. I can't remember where, but I saw somewhere that only about 25% of all new vehicles sold in 2017 were cars, the rest were trucks, SUV's, crossovers, or minivans.

Third thread, one in the Podium also. Another dead horse being beaten to mush.

I've got a feeling these trends will change with gas prices going up the way they are. Truck sales have surged in recent years because gas prices were pretty low.

The article doesn't say that they are ceasing production, but removing them from the U.S. and Canada. They probably have plenty they need to sell.

I’m not sure how many people this affects, but living in Toledo I’ll tell ya that a big factor with vehicle selection is winter around here. It’s the reason I went with a 2013 Sierra after trading in my Dodge Dakota, having something with four wheel drive and greater ground clearance is so much easier for those crappy months.

Now if I lived in Charlotte I’d be hard pressed not to buy a Camaro but it’s just easier having a bigger car. I will say though the Big 3 make boring a$$ sedans. They don’t have a ton of features and don’t have any real luxury or balls to them. My buddy just bought an 18 Altima Midnight edition and it blows it away

I just got back from vacationing in Florida, we rented a Nissan Maxima to drive down there in. I have to say it felt more like a Mercedes than a Nissan. It had about every feature imaginable, was very comfortable, and very fast.

High end Lexus are some pretty impressive cars too.
The mid priced cars are very similar.
The real noticeable drivability and creature comfort advancements for sedans are obvious when you get up to and beyond the $100K area.

Kia just came out with the Stinger, very cool car twin turbo 6 in the top of the line edition with 365hp. Handles good, looks good and it has ton of cargo space. You can get it in AWD, but it will run you $50k, but that will put you on par with cars costing $20k more. Seriously thinking about getting one next year.

Agreed, my 2012 Hyundai had more features than most domestic sedans too. Alas, living in texas and needing to slim back down from 6 cars to 5, I took dad's truck and sold the car. I don't regret it.

looks like Toyota is feeling a bit of the less demand for the sedan market in the U.S. also.

In North America, Toyota and its domestic rivals are grappling with intense competition and falling demand for sedans, a mainstay of Japanese automakers in the region, amid an overall slowdown in the world’s second-biggest auto market.
