IMSA 2019

Got to keep up with the times, it was only a matter if time for Chevy to make the switch after the Ford GT debuted and best the sh!t out of everyone back in 2016. It sucks because I'm a traditionalist as well when it comes to the Corvette, but this had to be done to compete against Ford, Porsche, and Ferrari.
Yep, even the 911 RSR is more mid-engined than rear-engined. Ford and Ferrari upped the ante and everyone else had to respond, and I don't think it's a big secret even GM feel they've gotten all they can out of the front-engined design. Look at the new cars that have front engines (BMW and Aston Martin) and neither are doing too hot in IMSA or WEC.

How sales go will be interesting though. I agree it's going to be rough at first with the traditionalists. It's going to be hard to let go of that front engine NA V8.

Well lets be honest, the main reason the GT did so well in 2016 was because the fix was in, especially as LeMans. The results since then have been solid but not earth shattering. As far as race cars go, IMSA cars are so BoP'd that they could likely make a Volkswagen Beetle competitive if they chose to do so. As for street cars, the GT is the automotive equivalent of a unicorn. Supposedly they exist, but YOU'LL probably never see one, even less likely one actually going down the street, so how much does it matter? What DOES matter is selling cars, and not only does a mid engine car not really fit the Corvette buyer demographic, it will likely price most of them right out of the market. The guys who CAN afford one or WANT a mid engine car probably aren't going to buy a Vette anyway. I love the Corvette as much as anybody ever put on this planet, but you have to be realistic about what it is, and what it isn't. GM would be a LOT better served to concentrate on making the current car lighter, using better quality materials inside, improving fit and finish and refining the ZR1 so it isn't a lethal weapon in the hands of anybody but a professional driver and forget trying to take on cars that have an off the chart snob factor, are hand built and cost 3-4 times as much in the sales battle. You would think the lesson of Cadillac would be etched in the brains at everyone at GM. Cadillacs keep getting better and better and better, but but they will NEVER be what the envision themselves to be, a straight up competitor to the established foreign luxury brands. The guy who drives a Mercedes sedan is NOT going to buy a Caddy, even if it's twice as good and half as expensive, and like the Corvette, overseas sales will never amount to diddly either. These are American cars built for American tastes and sensibilities and they carry American baggage with them that I don't believe they can EVER shake. Better to concentrate on knowing what you are and doing THAT better than it's ever been done, and forget about being what you are not and cannot be. I want to be 6'3", 180 LBS, look like George Clooney, talk like Sam Elliott, sing like George Straight and be cool like Tom Selleck. Obviously, NONE of that is happening, so I do the best I can with the hand I was dealt.

This is all just SO wrong. The whole idea of a mid-engine Corvette is as stupid as a front engine 911. The Corvette has had a basic identity since 1953, and it is foolish to stray this far from the script. The Corvette is what it is, the good the bad and the ugly. Let it be what it is.
I came across a story about a mid engine Viper program:
https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-cu...649155/mid-engine-dodge-viper-concept-secret/
The article said it was too expensive plus the grass roots Viper crowd told Dodge that front engine layout is the American standard for sports cars.

The Corvette is the sales leader by far in the U.S. when it comes to sports cars. Quite a gamble to go to a six and mid engine. But the current version was 6 years old and with all of the Gov't changes that could be the reason. Putting a six in place of the 8 in the front compartment probably wouldn't be a selling point for many. eh my guess anyway.

Load-in day for the Roar. With any luck I'll ditch this cold and feel good enough to go on Saturday. :booya:

Good luck ! I will be glued to the IMSA website and I guess I'll see if radio le mans has anything.
I know about that cold thing. Its been kicking my butt all week. Just now starting to round the corner.

Been out of the loop on LMP2 vs the DPi class. Any info or links would be appreciated.

RLM should be covering the 'qualifying' on Saturday and Sunday with highlights at 5 PM all three days, and the PC enduro tomorrow at noon is on IMSA.TV

DPi are all going to be sped up and LMP2 slowed down, plus P2 is a Pro-Am class now. Not much subscription so far...only two or three P2 entries are likely to be around the majority of the season and only four at Daytona.

Daytona Prototype 3 race on IMSA TV right now. Does the heart good. I see they have gone with tire
barriers at the bus stop. That will be good for a 30 min caution each time a car punts those. I guess they
are getting serious about "not" blowing through the chicane. If they are there for the 24 , that will be good
for 2 or 3 rebuilds.

Pretty good race, the LMP3s seem to draft really well at Daytona. For the first hour at least of the race it seemed like Grist/Simone/McAleer were never more than a second and a half apart.

I wasn't aware that Letarte was going to do any announcing?

They need an expanded crew for the 24 and someone has to take Allmendinger's spot in the main both for Daytona too. I see Steve being more of a pit reporter/on the ground guy for Daytona though.

Every year I look to see what the different classes are - they seem to change frequently. I found this:
https://www.imsa.com/discover-sportscar-championship/classes
But it is pretty vague, it doesn't lis the differences.
All of the DPi machines are based on an LMP2 chassis - whether it be Dallara (Cadillac), ORECA (Acura), Multimatic (Mazda), or Ligier (Nissan) - with manufacturer engines and varying degrees of aero and chassis development. If you look at any of the ORECA 07s at Daytona this weekend and compare to the Penske Acuras they're nearly identical except for the 'boomerang' on the Acura and some other subtleties. They were all one class the last two years, but LMP2 is now Pro-Am only with reduced power while the DPi have been unleashed a bit. So far this weekend it looks like there's at least 2 seconds and 7 MPH top speed difference between DPi and LMP2.

GTD doesn't quite have the performance of GTLM and they're designed to be easier to drive because the GT3 platform was designed mainly for Pro-Am formats, so they have both ABS and TC. GTLM have better power and aero but lack the ABS. The Michelin tires in GTLM are also designed specifically for each individual car whereas GTD have had one tire designed for the class as a whole.

Pretty big deal even though the lap time is 'unofficial', considering the monsters that have lapped around this place before. Mazda have made big strides over the offseason, reliability still going to be a big question mark though.

Ana Beatriz coming back to the States for this effort and locking down top pit and garage selection is cool to see. The all-ladies MSR team is going to be a legit contender.

They did give the DPI's more horsepower this year. So it stands to reason they would be faster. But a record is a record. Hate to see one of Dan Gurney's records of 26 years fall, but it was inevitable

Interesting thing is the top speeds look to be the same as last year. Acceleration might be improved...I haven’t looked at the wing angles or anything to see if they had more drag this weekend but the biggest difference so far seems to be that Michelin makes a much better tire than the notoriously poor Continentals. They’re about 1.5 seconds quicker in sector 1 where all the twisties are. Regardless it’s a heck of a record to beat and I wonder if they can dip into the 1:32s at the end of the month.

I think I liked the previous scheme better.
It's just for Daytona since the 24 is supposed to be a throwback of sorts for the IMSA 50th anniversary. The Motorcraft looks like the 1985 GTO class-winning Roush Mustang:

and the Castrol looks to be the same design as the 1988- and 1990-winning Jaguar XJR-9 and XJR-12:

Thanks. I hadn't heard about the anniversary throw-back. I've only been following IMSA for the last six or eight years, and I'm not very familiar with older schemes or the history of the series.

I am going to miss the limey guy and roof top Ray in the wee hours in the morning with one camera shooting the course, no commercials, and the Limey guy got battier as the night wore on from lack of sleep as did I. :p

Do we know that Ray's work won't be used at all? IMSA and NBCSN will be showing something from 0-Dark-Thirty to 0-Black-Hundred. Won't he be up there anyway, shooting for international feeds and other coverage?

That middle of the night coverage is absolutely surreal. If you've never seen it (or LeMans), keep reminding yourself that while you're watching, they're out there going around in the middle of the damn night while most of the hemisphere is zoned out.

yep So far Roof top Ray hasn't said he is working the race, but who knows.

On the other hand, he hasn't said he hasn't either. I'm going on the 'No news means no change' theory / hope.

I imagine that 3-6 AM window that's available only online or on the app will be rooftop coverage with IMSA Radio commentary, perhaps.

Townsend is going to be rotating between commentary and the driver's seat as well. Hopefully they don't goof it up too much with Letarte, Rutledge, etc...

I hope they don't accidentally put Rutledge in the car.
