The Attendance Thread

Basketball, hockey, football still have good attendance.

I don't buy all these excuses.

Though I agree fans should support short tracks more like how road courses seem to do welp now.

I used to attend every race from California to Vegas to Phoenix on the yearly, Larry Mac.... Then your bosses sold their souls to network TV and the debris caution/chase/CoT/commercial every 3.5 minutes era began. I laugh at your attendance and TV ratings :)

Loving the "new package" by the way, Fontana was amazing this year, so sad I missed it...

hahahahahaha

I’ve attended Atlanta and Bristol so far. Trying to talk the misses into Charlotte, fingers crossed. I know it ain’t the same as it used to be but damnit it’s still fun to attend In person. Just can’t beat the sound and smell.

It is the fans fault, if your circumstances don't allow you to attend in person,
at least turn on the TV.

I think most of the races have had 35k in attendance so short tracks are no better or worse than the cookie cutters.

Vince also just signed a billion dollar deal with Fox for Smackdown to be on Friday nights, programming on FS1 and has that Saudi Money coming in. So while main show's arnt what they used to be, Vince an Co. have become creative in other ways to become more profitable than some would say in their 2 boom periods.

Absolutely, the money they are still making is fantastic. Strictly speaking attendance their weekly TV and house shows just don't draw anything what they use too.

Wrestling as a whole is thriving, the All In show ran in Chicago last year sold out 10k+ and New Japan Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor just sold out Madison Square Garden last Saturday..

A new company is entering the mix soon called All Elite Wrestling, which is being by run the son of the Jacksonville Jaguars owner so they have millions of dollars and rumor has it they might be on TBS/TNT. They sold out their first even memorial day weekend at the MGM Grand Arena.

It's going to be an interesting year in wrestling lol

Comparing MLB attendance to Nascar is bizarre as MLB had about 70 million in the stands last year. It would take Cup over 30 years to draw that number of fans. The way things are looking it may be this year but next year for sure when attendance for some races drops below 30k.

The reason hotels and other things go up when an event comes to town is due to supply and demand so there is certainly a reason.

No comparison needed, I'm just stating the MLB is feeling a squeeze on the attendance side. That's all, but at the same time that's what's wrong with lodging IMO. There is a reason why folks are not willing to travel and pay outlandish expenses at hotel. I'm not going to read to far into this anymore. It is what it is once again.

Make a difference and go to the race or watch the telecast. Simple as that, I'm honestly tired of going in circles with the same topic(s). Buy merchandise, do something because I buy my merchandise. I have four shirts coming from DDA now and I'm going to Daytona is July.

I'm going to do my part. How about you do yours for once and stop bellyaching? This cyclical stuff is just silly now.

Larry Mac is correct in spirit regarding the #moreshorttracks movement. The current short tracks need to be better supported both in live attendance and TV viewership to make a convincing case to expand to other short tracks.

Hotel and lodging costs rise and fall with demand, just like everything else in our economy. I'm in the business working with properties that have high seasonal variance. Weekends cost more than weeknights. Summer costs more than winter. When there's a popular event in town, prices go up. Many hotels are only financially workable because of the increased rates created by high demand dates. Sorry, that's just reality. Hotel owners have no obligation to artificially lower rates to serve another business unless they have reason to believe that will benefit them as well. That said, the general lack of modern lodging around Bristol is unfortunate, and will be difficult to rectify under current conditions.

I know all that, I am a fan. I hope AEW is a success because theres nothing wrong with an alternative. But the WWE is actual Pop culture now, a publicly traded company with their own network. I dont think AEW will even make a dent on them especially if WWE will find them as competition, a WWE that gives a crap about the weekly content it puts out will be hard to beat.

I lost interest in wrestling when I was 12. I know of many smart people that thoroughly enjoy it though. I don't like its intrusion into the actual sporting world.

If MLB is feeling the squeeze Nascar must be feeling the Python. I have no interest in buying any Nascar merchandise as IDK anyone that wants it for a gift and I have no use for it myself.

MLB and Nascar are similar in one respect as they both skew old.

using your numbers to compare any comparison is nonsense unless you use troll math. :p bizzare..good one :D

70 million fans a year for MLB compared to a million and change for Nascar is a shocking differential.

This is lunacy. There are about 2,500 MLB games per season if my quick math is correct. Responding to "MLB is experiencing attendance struggles too" with a comparison of raw attendance numbers between 2,500 events and 36 (or 38) is wackier than using raw loop data passing stats to assess the quality of a race.

Actually what is really crazy is comparing Nascar to MLB for the purposes of the misery loves company argument. Both Nascar and MLB have old audiences but other than that not much else.

I agree that only an idiot would count on raw loop data passing statistics to ascertain race quality. It is like staring at the leaderboard while the race is on seeing how far David Ragan is pulling away from Timmy Hill. Thankfully I know of no one that subscribed to either scenario.

So, if the NASCAR and MLB fans are aging out, what specific sporting event are younger people flocking to in huge numbers? Tennis? Golf? Figure skating? Is it my imagination, or has the NFL had abysmal ratings for a couple of years? Self inflicted, yes, still not good. So what's the magic entertainment venue? I'm sticking with NASCAR. Nothing else compares in my book. And my book is the only book that matters.

Regarding the NFL it is your imagination as ratings were up 5% last year.

Tonight’s race should be well attended as I was reading all the things Toyota has done to lure fans to the track. I’m not going to say the race will be sold out but I think it will be an impressive audience.

Would it be possible or has Nascar already approached the hotels to block book rooms??
The case can be made to those hotel owners that they help contribute or their won't be any racing in their area. Not meaning they sell cheap however as you know a guarantee
of sales is worth a discount.

That is pretty much nonsense, even a flea bag joint gouges all they can.

The NFL ratings the prior couple of years weren't my imagination. So where are all the young people going for entertainment these days, you know, the coveted 25-39 year olds. Where are they at?

I don't like being gouged by a hotel either. But they have only one slice of the money pie for a race weekend.

You do all realize the Nascar/France/ISC are the ones really making the money and gouging the fans.

ISC is Americrown concessions at all their tracks. So when you pay $8 for a beer and $8 for a hamburger that is all going into the billionaire France family pocket. I am all for free enterprise but I think there is making a profit and being greedy.
Also France loves when all the fans ire is turned toward the one business they don't own. Plus the slight of hand of pay no attention to what we are doing just get that other guy.

Go to Frontstretch. com there is an interesting article about how much the tracks make of TV and don't even need fans in the stands.

Good topic and I would love to discuss it but we should move over to the Sports and Entertainment thread to continue.

This always stymies the full time seat counters. Actual dollars and cents. :p

Total revenues for the three months ended February 28, 2019 were approximately $150.6 million, compared to revenues of approximately $148.9 million for the same period in fiscal 2018.
Net income for the three months ended February 28, 2019, was approximately $21.6 million.

I seen a decent amount of seats available. I hope they can get 35k-40k (aka 75% full).

Not as shocking as your inability to distinguish an orange from an apple.

There are 2,340 games played during the MLB
regular season. The playoffs add to that figure.

There is no serious possibility of NASCAR not racing at Bristol in the next decade or more. The real problem, if there is in fact a problem and this isn't just a distraction, is a lack of adequate supply. Hotel owners, vacation rental operators, RV parks etc. will decrease their rates at the point that their spaces aren't being filled at a higher rate. Revenue management and occupancy rate optimization are pretty straightforward.

Something else much more significant has changed, because when there were 160,000 people descending on Bristol in the previous decade, there weren't tens of thousands of cheap hotel rooms available nearby that have since closed.

Hard not to believe that the economy (less entertainment funds) and leisure time are a large part of the problem. Many fans can't afford to go if they wanted to.
This is just credit card debt, throw in auto and rent/house payment/bills and it ain't like it was years ago.Wages has not kept up
  • Average American Household Debt: $5,700. Average for balance-carrying households: $9,333
  • Total Outstanding U.S. Consumer Debt: $3.9 trillion. Total revolving debt:$1.03 trillion
  • 41.2% of all households carry some sort of credit card debt.
  • Households with the lowest net worth (zero or negative) hold an average of $10,308 in credit card debt.
  • The Northeast and West Coast hold the highest average credit card debt – both averaging over $8,000.

^ That is a much more convincing widespread factor, and it has been pointed out that NASCAR suffered more from the last economic downturn than many other large sports people use for comparison, because median income of NASCAR fans is lower than most other sports. The recovery has benefited working class lower-income earners the least, if at all. Credit is also less available now, especially for those already in debt, as you point out.
