With the recent announcement that in 2020, NASCAR will be a 2 man booth, I just i'd to know how many time in the past has NASCAR had 2 man booth, if any. Apologies if this sounds like a dumb question i don't really know the history of NASCAR broadcasting

2 man with ESPN Jenkins and Nuber, some 2 man - Joy- Baker on TNN.

As somebody who usually sides with the 'Less is more" point of view, I am interested in seeing how this works out. It seems like ALL sports networks are in a never ending quest to see just how many talking heads they can shoehorn into a broadcast, and it drives me crazy. As far as I'm concerned, get rid of ALL of the pre-race, mid-race, and post-race analysts, hire a couple more pit reporters, and let two guys in the booth do all of the major talking. It's TV not radio. Let the pictures speak for themselves unless you have information that is actually important, or at least interesting. My biggest complaint about BOTH Waltrips was that it seemed like Fox is paying them by the word.

FOX might be waiting to announce DW's replacement till after DW actually retires out of respect for DW, the 2020 Daytona 500 is still over 7 months away, they have plenty of time .

It will be interesting to see if they do actually not replace DW for 2020.

I mean, it's pretty common knowledge that it's Harvick's seat when he retires. Maybe they'll leave it open until he does retire.

Fox broadcasting big wig said they are going to a two man booth, also said Harvick was the number one prospect when he quits racing. But ya never know

I read that , and I also read the part where it said "for now"

That is very open ended .

Yep, its been clear for a few years now, it will be interesting to see what happens, I am hoping that Chad Knaus joins him in the booth, that would be a great combo, I really enjoy TV Chad and I have feeling he is going full time TV when he retires.

Aw man, now I'm hoping Harvick doesn't stay driving for so long he misses the chance to take DW's spot. Don't leave me, Kevin!

Like it says in the title. Personally i prefer 3 because I'm so used to it. It's all I ever known. most of my NASCAR experience comes after 2004. What about you guys?

I don't have a preference in terms of numbers. The way Fox has it now is fine with me. You have two mellowed out guys, one having been an ardent observer for decades, and another having experience within the field. Then you have the one extravagant character in between who acts as the old hand in the booth.

As long as I am being informed of what is going with or in the race, and the announcers aren't too monotonous, that is all that matters.

Just give me a Booth with a race focused Leigh Diffey in charge for the Final Stage. Give him a crew chief and driver to fill out the live-action race focused coverage.

The human interest, talking points, driver cue card blathering, and narratives can be for earlier stages of the race. I'll rely on PRN/MRN to get me thru that crappola -- but once they start the final stage I don't need to hear about Jimmie running a marathon, or how great HMS younger drivers B&B are without a win, fawning over KyBu, Team dramas or cutaways to Larry with prepared script and images of already discussed car issues.

I want live race coverage of the remaining lead lap cars on the track with timely Pit Coverage as relevant for the closing stage, Caution/s, and "overtime" -- to get to a professional call to the finish.

I prefer a booth without D.W. or Rick Allen. Of the two I would rather listen to D.W. Rick has a habit of announcing they are three wide about 30 seconds after they are back to two wide.

I would prefer a 1-man booth with minimal talking. Let most of the talking over the course of the race come from the pit reporters.

I don't mind pit reporters but prefer the camera stay on the track and just let them talk over the engines.

With the Waltrip over load in recent years, a two person nounce team would be better, I thinks.

Honestly I wanted to say 2 man booth, because of some of the races in the 80s having Ken and Chris calling them. I love that combo.

But I believe I’m more use to the 3 man booth than I actually realize, since it’s been around in one form or another for so long now. I’d probably miss it.

We'll see, either can work but damn if the guys now don't seem to feel that if there is a pause for a second it's a bad thing. What annoys me a lot is when one guy will make a point and then the next guy to talk makes the same point as if he never heard what the first guy just said. As others as said, it's like they're paid by the word. The booths can really do for a swing in the Ken Squire direction where a story can be told without talking yappidty yap yap yap damn quick.

Also, words that should be all but banned from the booth no matter the announce team:
Contact
Documented
Three wide
Boggity
Momentum
Package(aero)
All the stupid laughs and sound effectse DW is teaching Jeff
Points as of now

The second to last worries me a lot. I suspect they have told Jeff to emulate DW's style. There have even been instances where DW will says 'no, more like this' after Jeff does some 'wessheeww' or 'whowee' on air and you can hear it the next time Jeff says it that he changed it to what DW suggested.

The worst thing will be if it's the same stupid crap broadcast after he leaves. A fresh start would be a good thing which I also why I wouldn't mind if they replaced Mike Joy at the same time. (Jeff could be changed too for that matter)

TBH I don't really care if there are two or three commentators as long as they are good.
I think a 2-man-booth with Joy/Gordon could be pretty good, but how about a 2-man-booth with Allen/Burton?
I'd definately prefer Joy/Gordon over a 3-man-booth with Joy/Gordon/Mikey.

I'm not surprised Fox wants to go down to two announcers. Why should they bother paying a new announcer when the ratings are going down anyway...

Very true, save the extra money and cut back on the sound bites.
As it is, not many people are interested in what the booth says.
I personally like listening to knowledgeable guys like Harvick and Brad K. who can tell us
the what and why of how a car is really doing.

One guy can call a race that can stand on its own legs. 3 guys can try to make a dud exciting
