noticed the best crowd I have seen in years at bristol. Any idea what the track did to get so many people there for this race.

I am pretty sure they were running the short track package this race, which is 750hp, for bristol, and not the IROC package like the big tracks get.

Might even have a little bit to do with some organic excitement of young guys like chase Elliott making their presence known as of late.

I feel like excitement like this is a slow build that only shows over time. Maybe Bristol, Watkins Glen and a couple other tracks are showing the early signs of this.

Good racing = Good crowds. Bad news for death bedders. NASCAR is on an upswing in my opinion. After wandering aimlessly in the desert for a while, they seem to be finding their way again. It's all about the on track product. It's getting better and better.

the big tracks are also at the high end of the ratings. ;) More downforce at Bristol also. PJ-1 is making a difference in waking all of the tracks up for multi groove racing instead of single file (pioneered by Bruton Smith). The crowd at Bristol was impressive and I believe the factors above have all contributed to the increases and interest. It didn't just happen accidentally. A lot of thought and work under new management happened. I think it will continue to get better myself.

Need to make sure TV doesn't screw anything up with the new contract in 2021! Likewise with a new title sponsor coming onboard.

I agree the product is the best its been in some time. But there still needs to be more oomph moving forward! Hopefully people start going back to the track! The live experience is still the best in all of sports! Be nice if there would be an uptick in sales for the spring Bristol race after last night.

Local Bristol newspaper said track ticket sales were up 10-15% for last night's race. Also claimed campgrounds were visably more busy. I have nothing to compare it to but things certainly were busy Saturday at the track.

My educated guess being there in person was 60k-75k attendence.

I'll write a lot more once I get back home and on a real keyboard. What a bunch of stuff to discuss with you guys being there in-person.

If you saw last year's race you wouldn't be asking this. I guarantee you anyone who was there told everyone they knew how good it was. This year was the same. Last year had some wrecks. This year was clean, hard racing not many wrecks at all.

So if a person thinks the race was good and posts it on the internet they have to be a paid Nascar troll? They must have lost my check in the mail I never saw it lol.

A poster here referenced a knowledgeable YouTuber and iracer who highlighted genuine issues with the current package..rather, the Gen 6 car in general and made lots of suggestions on how to fix it. Highlighting side force as the current car's biggest issue in minimizing the importance of mechanical grip.

Nascar tested the X-3 car which has evidentially disappeared. I do think recency bias is a thing, and all the modifications and changes to the "package" are ways to manipulate the racing to mask the conceptual issues with the Gen 6 car.

The YouTuber, and his source has insight no one on this board seems to have in terms of the car, and I suggest everyone watches this.

The current package is a bandaid, covering the conceptual issues of the Gen 6, and manipulating the racing to improve the on track product so that the inherent issues with this car are masked. It is working for some, and not for others. I think one thing we can all agree on is that NASCAR is aware there is an on track product issue that begins with the Gen 6 car and what we are seeing this season is a work in progress/filler episode for when they role out the Gen 7.

Very excited for gen 7 and what they will do to eliminate side force and make mechanical grip more important to speed.

I don't think we should ignore the driver complaints about the car this year. Kyle Busch has highlighted this multiple times this season. This isn't to be ignored, despite some of us enjoying the package, which is what NASCAR wants.

They are getting there. And this package is a good placeholder for a lot until they roll out a total new car imo.

The faithful Nascarite simply practices good stewardership, and it was such a blessing to see our faith rewarded last night.

That's all we need. We are too humble to expect any thankfulness or reward from such an unlearnt generation, even when the gratitude would be so obviously deserved.

The racing is paramount. We are here do help, to point folks to Nascar, and to nourish weaker fans.

and I smile at such a sally. As we speak the OEM's are trying to design as much side and downforce into the new car as they can get away with.

Probably the 2nd biggest crowd of the year. A few years ago Bristol closed seats under the suites and added banners. I noticed this year coming out of turn 2 high up the color of seats looked different. Well they made those lodges and added tables. That took a few seats away. Looked about at least 87k.

Seeing last night's turnout, I'm glad we went last year because this year we might not have gotten a ticket, certainly not where we sat last year.. And drove through the hardest rain I ever drove through to get there but it was all well worth it. That place is such a gem. I hope this is a sign of things to come.

this is an interesting video. I personally think side force is also the enemy to having these cars look different across the makes. Nascar has tried to get rid of it. They have had all sorts of rules that mandate the rear trailing arm staying in place. Teams have come up with bushings and all sorts of other things to get around it. Heck it might be something the gibbs cars have as an advantage. that being having the rear trailing arm move to put side force on the car. When they made the cars more different across the makes, is mainly when they moved to get rid of side force. what I really like about that X3 car is the front splitter having that hump in the middle that prevents seal off.

Jr in the clip (not an aerodynamisist but looks to be a fan of spiderman) is wanting the cars to go back to the 2004 era with air under the car and the twisted sister era which he conveniently forgot about wich produced tons of down and side force. Not going to happen. Cars catching air and lifting off of the track and flying into the fences routinely isn't going to happen. Nascar is currently moving in the direction of closer racing and bit slower speeds for safety. I know that produces and manufactures misery in some, but it's the reality of the day. Ya know why that side force is there? Nascar wants it there. He is sadly mistaken if he thought those cars didn't have side force. Not to mention that the cars were sealed off in the front and air wasn't getting under the cars unless they spun which could lead to cars taking off.

anybody paying attention to the flared out "B&C" pillar the flat side on that earlier era car? That produces sideforce

The video is simplistic and juvenile, and without any real insight IMO, but it was "recorded at 3 am so you know it's really important"... LOL.

However, I share with that guy a disdain for side force, as I've posted many times. Once the downforce was scaled way back (2017-18), slashing side force was the last remaining aerodynamic step NASCAR needed, I believe. It's a pity that the video couldn't even say why that would be important... because the sudden interruption of side force when two cars get side-by-side, like in a passing maneuver, means cars can't race side-by-side through the corners. Indeed, the video also doesn't explain why downforce is detrimental to close racing or the ability to overtake. My rating: one star out of four.

I don't remember when the last yawner race was this year, even Michigan was a decent race. There are a whole lot more of working brain cells up in the offices of Nascar these days. They have reined in all of the developmental cheating, improved the racing, tightened up the competition and I am excited about the new car that is coming. I wouldn't be surprised to see a tic more horsepower for the last year of the gen 6. I think with the trackbite the packages can handle it.

I wonder how much time the average IRacing car spends in the wind tunnel?

The line between fantasy and reality in the wonderful world of auto racing will forever be blurred when someone sitting at a console hits the wall and injures him/herself.

Me and the girlfriend were talking about the crowd and to be honest in our opinions the 2017 crowd for Jr's last cup night race at Bristol at even bigger. That night was a lot of fun too. We (the fans in the stands) did a tribute for Jr that the tv cameras showed for a brief moment. It was cool. I distinctly remember looking across at the backstretch stands (we were on start/finish that night too) and to my recollection there were far less empty seats that night. That was probably the "Jr retiring effect". I will say that seeing Jr run there that last time did play a huge role in our decision to go which for me was the first trip there.

They should get rid of the upper terraces in the turns. I think that'd help "right size" Bristol and it's not like those seats are that lucrative to begin with when anything above row 15 from what it sounds like is a bad seat. Keeps the stadium/colosseum like bowl structure as well.

They would be wise to eliminate 20-30k seats. Those upper level seats in the turns and along the back straight simply don't sell anymore. I'm not opposed to opening up one end to give the place a view of the surrounding mountains. But I could see that being a difficult undertaking given how the structure was built. Either 160k seats are simply too may. I think 125k is probably more reasonable at this point. Still be lucky to sell a third of those for the spring race.

It was a bigger crowd than last year. Friday and Saturday were not sold out, but were definitely fuller than its been in a while. We had the same seats as last year, and already renewed for next September. [Cooler weather].We had us and 6 other people in our row, Gordon terrace, G 5 22 & 23 , so we had plenty of room. Pre race pit stop was good too. Still having problems loading pics, but I'll figure it out!!

Part of the allure and marketing of Bristol is the stadium like style IMO. That's why I don't want to see a horseshoe
