2019 South Point 400 -- Las Vegas --- Pre-race thread

The 4 is the only one to worry about. The rest are trimmed out. Bowyer will be lucky if he is Top 10 by the end of Stage 1 IMO. If 4 gets clean air, he will be able to manage the race, if not, he might be very ordinary IMO. Eye opener for me that Penskes are qualifying around MY Toyotas. I would be very curious to know what goes into a downforce set up--the non-adjustable elements. Penske and JGR are committed to the same philosophy IMO. I have a hard time believing that they have missed it.

Agreed.

Keselowski looks good to put that speed on a 30+ lap run. HMS looks strong too over a long run, I wonder if the JGR cars can maintain that fire-off speed?

Will be a good race though, I'm always very curious to see how these races play out.

I don't think that JGR has any fire off speed honestly. Penske v. JGR is going to be very interesting. SHR will fire off, but struggle in traffic IMO. Should be fascinating.

Probably. JGR cars get such good downforce that it seems their practice long run speeds doesn't usually reflect what they have for the race. It's probably better. 18 will be strong.

Do the JGR cars produce more DF than those of their competitors?

A little surprised this race is a late start for a Sunday race. At least for east coast. I know a lot of folks who pack it in early to get ready for an early Monday.

Who's dumbass idea was it to start the race so late on a SUNDAY??!

I've watched less this year than I ever have before. I may watch a little bit tonight but I wont be up to see the end. Nascar is built around the working man fanbase and some of us have to be up before the asscrack of dawn. Just stupid.

You know I have been thinking about something, I'd rather have the top 35 in points are locked in rule then this whole charter system crap, at least with the top 35 rule, you had teams automatically qualify for races based on merit. You didn't have teams like Rick Ware Racing, do absolutely nothing all weekend and make the field.

It's hot in Vegas.

Yeah I work 6 PM to 6 AM today/tomorrow morning but the nature of my job allows me to have the radio on. But I can imagine how people who have to be up at 5 AM would be pissed.

You have to think about the safety of those at the track, not those sitting in their 65 degree living room. Heat is the number 1 weather related killer in the US if you weren't aware.

The point is that they are clearly doing something better than the competitors lol. They wouldn't be the best team in the garage if they didn't. Those cars are doing something right, to the point where they usually run better on longer runs than practice speeds would indicate.

Logical.

Then do it Saturday.

If NASCAR didnt schedule this race when they did, they wouldnt of had to push the start of the race back to a late starting time.

You with Clutch and Bobby? I've been sitting at pit exit line so basically complete opposite end all season here lol.

I'm boat poor at the moment so had to sit this one out.

That is a great spot to be as well!

Oh, sorry. I thought you attributed their outstanding performance to “good downforce”.

Publicly available practice speed data doesn’t tell us what configuration the cars are in. They might be optimizing handling and driver feel on low fuel ... to be fast or fastest on long runs.

Or they’re sandbagging.

Yeah I have no clue why NASCAR did that. I know the Vegas Tourism board shelled out money for the 2 races but there's no common sense putting this race in September. I'm not sure moving it another 2 weeks is completely fixing the problem, but it might help.

Yeah, two weeks from now, its still going to be hot out here( NV/AZ) , ideally, they should of scheduled right before Phoenix and done the TX/Vegas/PIRISM west-coast-ish swing part 2.
