DAYTONA Road Course - Go Bowling 235

I'm glad that NASCAR is primarily an oval series and I hope it will always be. But I love that they do some road races and am even more tickled when they go somewhere new.
NASCAR could replace all ovals 1.5 miles and larger with road courses and I'd never miss a one of them.

In my early nascar fandom I loathed road courses....now I wish they had more. Which is sort of funny now that I type that. NASCAR I was all about fast and left..yet, I loved the IMSA GTP series at the same time. Al Holbert, group 44 jags, any 956/962..etc. Le Mans was must see tv when it was on.

A lot of folks pointing to Kyle but I think the Penske guys could also be at a huge advantage with all of the sports car experience they have as an organization there. Different cars, but there's a lot of information that applies across the board and they've got some really good information sources to pull from.

A very polite way of saying that, no practice is stupid, I totally agree. Nascar has done some silly things but this rates right up there with the best dumb move.

From everything I've heard the no practice was more at the team owners request than nascar. If you have any amount of practice now you have to prepare and bring a backup car. I'd imagine the cost savings of only having to prepare half the cars is huge

Theres only been 1 team that has been outwardly critical of not having practice and that it’s been a detriment while his teammate is currently 50/50 to win the championship. Everyone else has seemingly accepted it, put their heads down and gone to work.

Everything is great.

Wish I could be there but had a conflict...will still be watching in HD. I love the no practice - no qualifying changes. Big teams with big money had clear advantages. They used practice to fine tune with some general sharing of data, creating less drama within the races relative to adjustment. Now less certainty equals more on-the-fly changes throughout the race.

Now put that into THIS scenario, a road course at Daytona with no practice....WOW!

and maybe throw rain into the equation... Just hope the lightning will stay far away from the race track.

Good point, but, no practice at venues you have experience with is understandable when factoring in $$$$, however, when going to a never before ran on road course, at the World Center of Racing, it may or may not end up costing you more in torn up equipment and a really bad end result of poor entertainment for the fans. Say what you will, Nascar is in the entertainment business.

Your comment is logical in the current screwed up situation we all face ourselves in today in the USA.

The TV ratings will probably settle it for those involved. Because you are right, it is an entertainment business. There will be winners and losers.

Five days of iRacing for Harvick with a day in the Ford sim in between. It sounds like they have some configuration ideas of their own that could be toyed with with more time to prepare as well.

I agree. I'm thinking that this race would be one where practice would be appropriate since they've never run the course. It will put a premium on a driver's natural ability without practice.

Practice is over.

The cost savings are staggering. A positive consequence at this critical time.
I had plenty of concerns about the lack of practice for a first-time race, thinking electronic substitutes would be insufficient. If the teams don't think they needed, who am I to say otherwise? It will make picking fantasy teams a bit more difficult without any live data under current conditions, but it's not like that's a science anyway.
can you imagine the cars the teams don't have to build, motors they don't have to buy.
They're permanently knocking a day or two off the old 'normal' weekend schedule. They can take plenty of off-track costs out of the budget - hotels, rent-a-cars, food, etc. Not to mention the savings on tires. Scuffs are going to be a thing of the past.

Most of my HMS boys are in a pretty good starting position but the 88 team is going to have their work cut out for them starting all the way back in row 14. But my boy Harvick is on the pole so it could be a pretty good day. It definitely won't be to bad of a day because I will actually get to watch this one while eating some of the best left overs my microwave can produce. :punkrocke

Like I heard on the late shift in the words of Dale Inman

No matter what happens 2 things are certain
1. There will be a race
2. There will be a winner

I think it'll either be the most lackluster race of the year or the most beating, banging and wreck fest

That's pretty close to what people were saying about the first Charlotte Roval race. Hopefully saying it again will result in a similar race this time. :)

This is usually a road course weekend and Watkins Glen and Sonoma were unavailable. Daytona’s road course was available and a deal was struck. It’s not that complicated.

Although I would not mind a Sonoma race in summer.

NASCAR is still running the oval in a few weeks anyway. You’ll get your russian roulette wreckfest soon enough.

Well, that's not what Sonoma would look like this time of year....to your point....earlier in the spring would be stunning as your picture shows. My guts are still ripped out missing Sonoma this year. Kills me.

I am giddy waiting for this race. @StandOnIt changed my mind about road courses--I mean that. Can't wait.

I'm going with wreck fest....... oh wait, these cars are going to be used 1 more year.

The storyline for me will be Martin Truex Jr. He is so good on road courses. He mentioned in the Toyota replay of his win in Sonoma when he was with MWR that Rodney helped him find a set up that he uses to this day on road courses. It will be very interesting to see if he can assert himself without any practice. Looking forward to this.

Excellent post.

I wish there was also no competion yellows as well as no practice.
Let the track and the winds of war yada yada eat one of the competitors day first.
It is suppose to be the epic battle and all the Hell stuff.

Note wish I could add the love theme from "jaws" soundtrack and an iconic voice to the post, just not enough posting prep time.....
