2021 Food City Dirt Race Pre Race Thread

Richard bringing the smoke

This is from last October. In his day, it was true that NASCAR had reason to separate themselves from the hobbyist dirt ranks to build themselves into a premier national auto racing series. If he still believes this, it's because he's not paying attention. That's fine, as he isn't calling the shots.

One of my favorite things about all of this is how they park
head first in the pits. Now thats local dirt track style!

If they can do a crystal clear Pepsi they should be able to do crystal clear dirt to help prevent being blinded by the dust.

This is giving me major Indy 2008 vibes. We’re running the race during the day instead of the night for the 6 fans in LA so it’ll be a one groove snooze fest, and the tire compound is so bad we’re gonna have mandatory yellows every 20 laps. This doesn’t sound ideal

A night race would be better suited to west coast TV viewers. Never can keep it straight what the complaint is about with start times. I thought earlier was supposed to be better.

Yes, dirt track conditions are better at night. They are doing it when they're doing it because that is when the TV network wants to air it, and it's typically still cold in the evening in Tennessee in March. Mostly the former.

Complaining is the point.

Unfortunately I agree based on the tire wear. Track is shreddddddddddding them and wait til we've got 40 cars out here on Sunday.

This experiment is nuts.

I like the insanity of this and its working, you have guys like Chris Harris and Will Buxton chiming in on how insane this is.

This has been fun to watch, for sure.
Good or bad, it’ll be legendary.

C’mon, Goodyear. Whatcha’ gonna’ do?

A high school football field = 360 feet, grass, maybe turf in southern states that spend more on football than education.

A professional football field = 360 feet, grass, maybe turf.

That's the biggest problem with the analogy, and honestly, it shows the big picture problem with NASCAR. NASCAR became so disconnected from its roots, and at least they're making an effort to go back. Football and other sports have never distanced themselves so much from their roots that they changed literally everything in pursuit of the mythical casual fan.

just dropping in to give my opinion:

if you nascar fans are enjoying this, go find your local dirt short track and take in how the real dirt professionals and some very much amatuers can make your friday and saturday nights entertaining. it will take a couple of weeks to get to know the personalities, but it is well worth the time. same can be said for your local paved track.

Local is always better.

Food.
Retail.
Services.
Racetracks.

I didn't watch practice and I realize that one fast lap doesn't tell the story but I was surprised by the results. I expected to see some lower level teams with bonafide dirt races higher on the board. It looks a lot like any other race practice with the big teams at the top. Jgr looks really fast.

I really expected this to be a lot less about the cars and more about the driver

Bowman pitters around on the dirt a bit. He has CJ Leary driving for him

Don't forget Bowman use to be a team car to the midget I hauled around and was schooled to drive on dirt by the owner of the car I hauled. He was racing on dirt when he was just a teenager and he use to race at Ventura speedway here in SOCAL a lot. Plus even before that he ran quarter midgets in Arizona when he was really young. So you are spot on about him being around dirt a little. :)
