2022 Silly Season

Has there been any talk about potentially expanding to 40 charters? And then have a few "open" spots for non-chartered teams? It would be nice to get back to 43-car fields at some point

I doubt they'll expand the number of charters anytime soon. That's more prize money that needs to be paid out and it makes the existing charters less valuable.

I'd like to see them return to 43 cars too but I think they'd do it with open spots if anything. But even still, I'd doubt they do that.

Why would they expand back to 43 cars when they have trouble filling the field with 40 cars at a lot of tracks?
The note being able to fill a 40 car field has more to do with the RTA and charters than it does with teams wanting to run the races. If you don't have a charter or a ridiculous amount of sponsorship coming in there's no way to show up for a race without losing money.

It's a payout structure issue not a competition issue.

The thought is that with the Next Gen there'll be a lot more teams competing, which I agree with. I think we'll start to see guys being sent home at the major events next year and most races will have 40 cars. We've already got Kaulig joining, 23XI adding a car, Jr possibly jumping to Cup, and we always see an existing team add a car or have a new small team join every off season.

Same thing happened in Indycar. More spec parts and making things cheaper has led to a huge resurgence of that series with more fan interest and more cars joining the grid.

Preece in the 37 has made it to every race so far this year, and that's an open car. If you can get OK sponsorship dollars and finish 20th each week and still make it work maybe being an Open team isn't as big of a financial disadvantage as others thought? In the past open teams were always unsponsored cars running 35th. That 37 is an experiment this season and so far it's working. They said they might miss some races earlier this year but here we are a third of the way through the season and all that talk has disappeared.

The Charters are supposed to give team owners tangible value to their race teams beyond just owning cars and big machine shops. Yes, you're going to get more money as a chartered team. But week-to-week being open isn't supposed to be a disadvantage. It's supposed to be that if, at the end of the year, the JTG 37 team and the JTG 47 team closed shop, the 47 team would be worth more money and sell for a higher price. Charters aren't supposed to give you a competitive advantage week-to-week- it's a business thing pure and simple.

The wood brothers tried it for one year and decided they didn't want to do another year without one. From what Brag Daugherty keeps saying it sounds like the 37 only has enough money to run the first 26 races. It's a huge financial disadvantage as your competitors are receiving significantly more money per race that they can then put back into the team. How much more? I'm not sure they'll ever tell us, but it pretty clear you can't build a competitive team running without a charter.

The charter and team aren't necessarily a package deal. The charter could be sold separately to one buyer (and likely would be). The #47 hardware would probably be purchased by someone else at prices comparable to the #37 gear.

I think NASCAR is waiting to see of another OEM joins the ranks before expanding.

Until then and as you said, they will stick with 36 until further notice.

They don't have a choice without RTA agreement.

The whole point of the new car is that it doesn't really matter anymore. Every team has the same chassis, you just need to execute the best at the race track and have good setups.
You have a good point there but I still believe it will take awhile for 30 to 40 place teams to learn what to do with what they have. Many of these teams for example relied on to much camber to help the car turn. It will be fun to watch though and should make it more competitive in the top ten.

Are you saying Kurt is on a 30th to 40th place team?

Kurt is 18th and Ross is 20th. For a driver of Kurt's caliber I would think
that team is at best a 20th place team. They will benefit from the new car,
but by how much is the big question.

I think if that's true it only puts more pressure on Bubba to perform

That’s swell I just bought my first Kurt Busch 1 Monster T-shirt ha ha. I can’t imagine why Chip would let Kurt leave.

I wonder who Ganassi brings in at that point for the 1

That's a solid second-tier Chevy. Would Reddick regard it as a step up? Suarez? I could see DiBenedetto there, depending on how Penske shakes out.
No on Suarez or Reddick IMO, both are important to their respected teams.

I don't really see a plausible replacement for the 1 car, at least IMHO. Matt D can fit anywhere, its just replacing someone of Kurt's caliber is a tall task.

Maybe Erik Jones, but Kurt has some type of funding attached to him filling some races out... I'm not sure at all.

I could see Jones, take a shot a Gragson though between him and Chastain that is a lot of torn up equipment and Ganassi hasn't had much luck in the past with the all young guys thing.

Gragson is definitely possible. I understand your point about torn up cars, but Ganassi is the guy who hired Montoya etc. Also with Hendrick's lineup/age(s) and recent performance, I don't see any spot opening up there anytime soon for him. That may be his best shot to stay with Chevy.

I think Noah's best shot is if JRM goes cup next season
