'21 Generation 7 Car news

I'm not all the way through the DJD episode about the new car but one thing its seems teams will be trying to mess with off the start are the rub blocks. Sounds like they're made of aluminum, so given wear during a race it's possible to get the car to sit lower. Also sounds like some huge gains could be made in the transaxle, which are supposedly going to be sealed. I have to imagine this will be another area that penalties will be huge if you get caught messing around in.

Hard to have a sealed gearbox rule when final drive ratios have to be changed track to track.

"We’ve got a lot of experience supplying the existing ratios for the different tracks,” outlines Barton. “We did some analyses of what cluster ratios all the teams are using, and from that tried to get within a small percentage of those with a selection of fixed cluster ratios.” Currently, the overall gearing in top gear is mandated by NASCAR for each track, defined using the ring and pinion ratio; for example, a superspeedway such as Daytona will see a 3.45:1 ratio, while a short track such as Martinsville will use a 6.20:1."

It sounded like they would possibly have 3 sets of approved box types for different tracks. Also sounds like a 5 speed gearbox so at some tracks you just wouldn't be using 5th gear (or other gears). JR said at Bowman Gray they only ran around in 2nd gear.

They probably didn't have a suitable final drive ratio for that "test".

Another thing that came up on the DJD that seemed interesting was the possible manipulation of the diffuser during the race. Possibly hurting a competitor by damaging their diffuser or possible damage making the car faster. Will be interesting to see how it plays out. Just hope you can't hit someone to purposely damage the diffuser and significantly slow them down

Doesn't that happen with other body parts now?

I don't see anything that would put it on the sidelines, just a few scratches

It's a two day test, so if nothing else, they should be able to make it tomorrow. I thought they would have a back up car.
