This week on Door Bumper Clear

Denny was on Stackin Pennies this week. I haven't had a chance to listen yet but im really looking forward to it after these two had their issues a couple years ago.

Denny was pretty good this one. I don't even think he let what I like to refer to as "Dumb Denny" slip out

Kevin Harvick, Joey Lagano, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, MTJ, Ryan Blaney, Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin.......
Well, five of those guys are considered unlikable by a LARGE block of fans, and Truex and Larson don't have much more personality than Chase does. Blaney could possibly be the MPD, but he hasn't had the on track stats to really break through.

That's what I can't understand. How does someone find time to listen to these things? If they were 10 minutes I might listen, but many of these are 45 minutes or more.
I listen in my office at work, I listen in the car, I listen out in the shop working, I listen when I'm mowing the grass or pulling the weeds, or whatever. Sometimes sitting on the couch with the dogs while my wife watches the Hallmark Channel......... I just got done listening to part one of an interview with David Ifft on the Scene Vault Podcast, which is a podcast I HIGHLY recommend if you love stock car history the way I do.

I'm pretty biased myself. Not only are Elliott's accomplishments being widely ignored, but if they could possibly find out what Ty has for breakfast we would know about it.
On the other hand, I think Elliott has to take some of the credit. He is a tough interview, and not a darling of the press at all.
Complete crap. Elliott is loved by the media. If I have to ****** listen to the "experts" rant on and on about how hard he is on himself, I am going to puke. They love his down home stuff. Damn, you really missed on this one.....and his accomplishments are ignored. I am very clear that he is the best of all time. Dear God....what are you sipping?

How many, and what does that even mean? Disliked to the point that this "LARGE block" wants them out of the sport....and if it isn't to that degree, is it really even "dislike" at all?

eh - burp -. Too much rice

They are disliked by enough people that they need not ever worry about being elected MPD. What more do you want me to say?

True, if his name was Clyde Smith, he probably wouldn't have half as many fans, but you don't get to choose who your parents are. You can't knock a guy because of the accident of birth. At least he has chosen to try to live up to the example set by his dad in the sport and not act like a spoiled brat all the time. If I had to guess, I'd bet he would be just fine without all of the attention being the MPD gets him. If he was craving constant attention, he wouldn't still be living in Dawsonville.
Hey i agree and I'll add he has garnered a ton of fans on his own that never saw his dad race.

Several other drivers I would put at his talent level that don't have near the popularity.
That wasn't your original point.
That's where I don't understand his popularity. So many other drivers do a lot more for fans and the media
I offered two reasons why Elliott can be popular without being active on social media. Jr. avoided social media like an AIDS-infected pit bull for most of his racing career. That didn't stop him from notching several 'Most Popular' titles.

That's what I can't understand. How does someone find time to listen to these things? If they were 10 minutes I might listen, but many of these are 45 minutes or more.
Well, I listen to a couple of 45 - 60 minute podcasts on my morning walk.

Sometimes sitting on the couch with the dogs while my wife watches the Hallmark Channel.
Gawds, that is one insipid network. Successful young woman on the brink of a promotion has to leave profitable big city job to return to the small town she conveniently has forgotten why she left, meet the scruffy old boyfriend she's also forgotten why she ditched, falls in love with him anyway, has a fight with him with 20 minutes to go (usually over something she overheard out of context), makes up with 5 minutes left, and decides to ditch her career to stay and take over the small family business.

My point is with probably the exception of MTJ who on that list does less than Chase for the fans and media?

Joey - weekly Sirius, several brodcasts
Kurt - A lot of truck races in the booth
Kyle Busch - A couple races in the booth, Owns truck and ARCA teams
Kyle Larson - A ton of grassroots
Kevin - Races from the booth, used to have his own show on Sirius
Ryan - SRX, weekly Sirius, Races from the booth
Chase - SRX, Chili bowl

So you are saying that in order to be the most popular driver in Nascar it's doing the most for fans thing? :idunno:

Doesn’t Hailie Deegan keep trying to be popular with fans with her social media platform. ?
What does that have to do with being the most popular driver? There isn't any formula out there and Chase Elliott proves that along with his Dad who has the record of consecutive years in a row of being the most popular driver. In Hailie's case and all of the rest who are on the list above, popularity is important but that isn't in any way linked to what makes the most popular driver.

I think part of the attraction to Chase is that is kind of the anti-version of what many other drivers are. That doesn't mean he is right and they are wrong, just that his "brand" appeals to certain people more than maybe some of the others do. If you want my honest opinion of the drivers above, I'll give it to you.

Logano: A lot of people were turned off by all the sliced bread stuff (not his fault, but perception is perception), Has gotten into a lot of pissing contests with more popular drivers, and comes off as smarmy and uncool.

Kurt: If the Kurt we see today was the Kurt we had gotten twenty years ago, the story would likely be whole lot different, but his past, as well as his brother are his albatross. Drives a Toyota, which like it or not Rev, does turn off a segment of the fan base.

Kyle B: Well, where do you start? To be sure, Kyle does have a contingent of rabid fans, but the majority of the fan base does not like him at all. He is VERY polarizing, and only Dale Earnhardt had enough rabid supporters to outweigh all of his serious detractors. Drives a Toyota. (see above) Has managed to win a couple hundred NASCAR races, and never seem cool doing it.

Kyle Larson: Nice enough guy, but wasn't really moving the needle that much BEFORE his faux pas , and now that will always be an issue for some. If he continues to have seasons like 2021, his popularity could skyrocket. Still has to fight the perception that he would rather be somewhere else.

Kevin: Kevin is also a very polarizing guy. Never was able to capture much of the Dale Earnhardt crowd, years of mediocrity at RCR, outbursts, fights, getting into pissing contests with the sport's last two most most popular drivers, he hasn't done himself any favors in the popularity department. Some days I like Kevin, some days I can't wait for him to retire. Has a legion of fans, but not enough, and no reason to expect that to change this late in his career. If he goes into the broadcast booth, time may change the perception of him for the good.

Ryan: A great guy, really likeable, good with the media. Has pedigree, but not Earnhardt/Elliott pedigree. More winning and championship contention would really help his popularity. Doesn't really have an image, kind of the likeable sidekick.

Martin. Good guy, has had one of the best second halves of a career we have ever seen, but all those years of almost invisibility took their toll. If his Furniture Row success had come 5 years sooner, who knows? Not a real personality guy or media darling, even his pal Dale Jr. gets after him for not showing enough backbone on the track sometimes. One of the more invisible real stars the sport has, and likely too late to change anything now.

Denny: I actually think Denny is becoming a little more likeable and I do appreciate his willingness to discuss the issues in a way most of his fellow drivers are too chicken to. But, he is also Dennis who goes brain dead on the track sometimes, is often a do what I say, not as I do kind of guy, hasn't won a title even though he's had top notch equipment since day one, and sometimes just comes off VERY unlikable in big moments.

Chase: Pedigree, name recognition, success at every step coming through the ranks, Xfinity title in first year focused a LOT of attention towards, him, Jeff Gordon's hand chosen replacement, big time sponsors, makes the playoffs every year, wins enough to keep fans pumped. Appeals to fans who like the strong silent country boy type that aren't media darlings.

You have just accurately described the plot of 50% of all their shows. The other 50% are split between woman playing amateur detective and woman somehow meets the prince or king of some tiny European country and they fall in love despite differences in culture and the objections of the royal family and staff.

People were ready to jump with both feet on the Blaney train when he came in. They did on the Jr and Elliott bandwagon because they were successful early and that held and is holding their fanbase.

So, if a driver doesn't win that award, then they are disliked? Lots of disliked drivers---arguably, more than you noted. Kyle Busch is not disliked by a "large block" of fans. He is disliked by an few who are very vocal.....Disclaimer: I tempered my language.

Yeah for sure, that is why there is a Kyle Busch rule in Xfinity and the trucks, because they just love their Kyle right? One thing I can say, you have never been close to reality when it comes to YOUR Kyle lol.

Who the **** is "they?"

This is true. I know a lot of them. I am one.
I'm one too. I was excited when Hendrick started sponsoring Elliott way back in the ARCA series and they had a couple articles about it and father Bill was involved also.

Go ahead and think that if you want, but it’s just the opposite. Kyle’s fan base is a vocal MINORITY, and much of that is all the kids that love M&M’s. Among the NASCR fans that I interact with, he is the most hated driver by. WIDE margin. The initials KFB didn’t happen.

Kevin Harvick, Joey Lagano, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, MTJ, Ryan Blaney, Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin.......
None of them are close

You're precious. KyBu had 2 merchandise haulers at Bristol last year, versus haulers that had 3, 4 and 5 drivers in 1 hauler..
Kyles merchandise haulers were 4 wide and 15 to 20 deep.
But, you believe what you want. A sea of Yellow M&M shirts, a sea of Interstate battery shirts, and a unwavering fan base at Every track says you're wrong.
Try harder...

I’ve been to a lot of races, and I have NEVER seen a sea of fans wearing KB merch. A respectable amount? Sure, but a fraction of the amount of whoever is the most popular at the time. The thing is, most drivers have a percentage of fans and a much larger percentage that could care less about about then. Kyle’s fanbase is probably as big as many other drivers, but the rest of the fanbase actively dislikes him. That was the intriguing thing about Dale Earnhardt. Probably 30-40% of the fan base HATED him, but the rest LOVED him. There was almost no middle ground on him, and I see Kyle the same way, only in reverse.

Have you ever been to the Toyota Racing Experience at the track when Kyle is the featured driver? It's packed. You have no data to state that Kyle's fan base is a vocal minority, and I think you know that. I respect your opinion, but here again, opinions are not statements of fact. I have never personally witnessed the M&M thing resonating with kids. If you think M&M's is on that car to sell to kids, you haven't been keeping up...remember, the demo this sport attracts? I isn't the kids. Why would I be surprised that the people you hang with hate Kyle? I'm not....and KFB came from Kyle himself, so there's that.

This, right here. My. Exact. Experience. In fairness, I have no clue how long the lines are at the 9 mercy trailer. Know why? Because I couldn't give a ****....maybe the same thing is operating with @Formerjackman. Additionally, I have no clue how many 9 t-shirts there are because I don't care. Blinders. Opinions.

I've been to alot too. 75+ ..Nothing like the live event,I get that, with every race being a special event.
I'm just saying what I've seen about the haulers. Yeah, I'm a Kyle fan because of his talent. He has a boorish demeanor as we all know. But, he Is one of the best drivers in History, which no real race fan can deny. To say his fan base is a vocal minority is an absurdity based on , what, exactly?
Of course he's hated. Human nature dictates that a winner can always be toppled, and secretly, that's what the minority wants.

When I was at Darlington three months ago, most of those guys were cheered pretty loudly. KyBu and Denny may have drawn more boos than cheers, but you know what Dale said about that.
At Charlotte, Kyle Busch gets booed pretty heartily (when I’ve attended). Harvick too to a lesser extent.

Pre Covid, when I attended every race at Charlotte, I’d say Kyle had the 2nd largest fanbase. It’s a sea of 9 gear, then a tight race between KyBu, Larson, and Blaney. Now the 9 contingent outnumbers them like probably 5:1, hence the booing, but it’s an interesting phenomenon. 75% of the fans there hate his guts, but those other 25% are hard core ride or die @Revman types. Makes it fun.

Fair. Just listen to the show. There’s a lot of snide “but what if the 9 did that” comments. And, frankly, sometimes they’re right.
I will say this....and this might shock some.....I don't buy into the 9 favoritism thing with NASCAR. I just don't.
