Cup RACE thread --- Martinsville

My question is why NASCAR didn't throw a caution when Ross hit the wall on the back. Maybe it was another case of not throwing the yellow on the last lap?

Because they didn't see any bubble gum wrappers on the track

My only concern and maybe it's just out there because it didn't seem like any of the impacts were overly hard, is I hope Ross didn't hurt himself. The way guys are getting concussions in the car is scary

Low in the 18 second range. 2 seconds faster than Bell, and so far an unofficial track record.
I just read that it was 18.845 seconds on another forum.
If counted it would be a track record for cup cars with all if it happening on lap 500 with a reduced HP package.

The Modifieds have the overall all time record for Martinsville.

I just don't see how you make a "rule" about this in the future. What would the rule state? "Drivers are not allowed to try and win a race or make the playoffs, you can only go 98% on the last lap, not 100". I mean, he rode the wall for half a lap and barely hit anyone until the finish line and even then he didn't even cause an accident!! How do you put a "rule" on that?

This was fairly unique...I don't think anyone is trying this other than at Martinsville or Bristol and even then he had the perfect scenario for this in that there wasn't one car in the high lane to get in his way. This would be a different discussion if he had tried this and took out 3-4 cars on the way to the finish line but that wasn't the case.

I know. Someone said if they hit they wall they get penalized. Well if someone is trying to pass me on the outside on the last lap I'm just going to run them up into the wall then.

Yea I don’t see either how a rule can be made to prevent this in the future. There are so many variables that you’re asking to be controlled if you made a rule, I see more issues developing if this was made to be a preventive move.

I had time to sleep on it and then further reflect and it still is one of the greatest moments in NASCAR history!! Thank you Ross Chastain for having the intestinal fortitude to put your team and playoff hopes on your back and making it happen! Incredible!

I don't know how you'd word it. It's almost impossible. But, I think it's a once in a lifetime move. Spotters have seen it now and will react accordingly. I think everyone was just dumbstruck in the moment yesterday like "there's no way this will...oh sh**"

The only bad thing about "the move" was it completely takes away from the fact that Bell won his way into the final 4. No one is talking about that today

Times were when someone would win the last race of the season but play second fiddle to the season champion.

The we need a rule for everything people are going to be disappointed. Some have already lost their lids, but unless Nascar changes it's mind more meltdowns are in the works lol.

The "move" beats the alternative

Ross purposefully wrecking 2-3 cars on last lap to get in the playoffs

Ask Bubba how wrecking someone intentionally went........sure different situation.... but it's still intentionally wrecking someone

Nascar is fine with intentionally wrecking them. Apparently the problem is getting them in the right rear. Ty squared up and hit the 19 so hard he buckled the hood and according to them that ok

Sports writers can try all they want to come up with a cool name for "The Move", but from here until the end of time if you look up the saying "Balls to the Wall" this video will play.

Do y’all actually want this every Martinsville race? The move is worth 2 seconds on the final lap. Will the leader do it to ensure he wins? It’s a can of worms here.

I think it's pretty easy to make a rule, actually. They can treat the wall like "out of bounds" similar to a road course or the yellow line at a superspeedway. Like if you accidentally cut the corner at a RC and pass someone, you have to give the spot back or face a penalty. I can see them making a rule that if you're in the wall and don't make an attempt to get off of it, you aren't allowed to advance your position.

Will they actually make it a rule? I don't know. But I wouldn't be surprised if they did, even if only to protect the wall at Martinsville from taking a beating in the future.

There's a video of someone walking against the wall last night. If you think the car looks bad, you should see the other guy...

Maybe "The Move" is enough

Bet he wish he could turn damage off on those Renault engines, too.

If you call it The Watermelon Wall it already has music

I sent some coverage of this to a buddy of 50 years I used to ride dirtbikes with. He is the type that picks an interest and goes ALL IN on that one interest. Never looks up from that one interest. Ever...until one day...he's over it., And it's the dumbest thing ever for ANYONE to express an interest in ever again. He's not a Nascar fan.

His response?

I believe this explains my analysis of his personality as above. Sweet baby Jesus dude.

I just knew he was dumping the 9. I sat there waiting for it.

NASCAR says he was running 100.483 mph avg. lap speed.

Completely worth the watch!

That made my stomach drop live. He wasn't on the tv feed and I thought he got dumped when Eddie said that.
