Ride the wall or pass in the grass

Ernie Irvan tried a pass in the grass during the Winston, I think it was his first All Star race in one of the famed Yates Thunderbirds. I don't think Earnhardt him inspired him to make the attempt it was just Ernie.

I was sitting in the new at the time blue seats in turn 4 and watched him put all four wheels into the grass as if he found a shortcut doing at least 180 mph. It was all over immediately when he hit the grass the wreckers were probably getting set to go get his car before he even came to a stop.

The next week some people where in some of the parking areas selling "A$$ in the grass" the shirts.

Maybe I'm just being a millennial, but the pass in the grass is romantized because it was "back in the day", and it was Dale.

Great car control, but it certainly isn't something that gives me a "wow"

What Ross did was so inherently absurd, stupid, and downright comical on TV that these two passes shouldn't even be in the same universe.

Pass in the grass was cool.

This **** was next level.

I went to see my brother who is a Chastain fan today just to have the can you believe it conversation.
We have watched racing all of our lives back when Cup was Grand National and Petty blue was the only color. I thought we had seen everything.

But we were laughing and cutting up about the Chastain move like to amazed boys filled with the wonderment and discovery.

It was ripe to be more romantized. I saw it on the radio and the more of the fan base followed racing on the radio than they would now, cable coverage was just starting to catch on. So the pass in the grass commentary was accepted a lot easier at face value.

It might be hard to imagine but Bill Elliott was also almost invincible on the big tracks in 1985. For the rest It seemed like a battle for 2nd place among the underdogs.

How about the skirt in the dirt?

Kinda shocked they didn’t call that cutting the course. Not that it should’ve, but I guess back then NASCAR made some better calls. Feel like if done today they would be like “oh you can’t do that!”

I was a big Dale Sr and I don't get what was so special about the pass in the grass? Seriously look at some of the saves guys have had in the last 15 years, they make the pass that wasn't a pass in the grass look like child's play.

What Ross did was something few have tried but never succeeded
