Cup RACE thread --- Martinsville

Thoughts and prayers to Hamlin fans. Please get out today and avoid alone times this week.

"I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory and the solemn pride that must be yours to have put all on the line only to have seen it cruelly snatched up in smoke all in just a few seconds.
To have seen one of your own like Denny drive an incredbly great race taking the white flag knowing that Phoenix was just around the next two corners. Then it was like that awful uncouth great white shark in the Jaws movie that just came out of nowhere and ate up Denny and a big part of TRDs dreams in just a few seconds in front of the whole world. Just devastating.

To my fellow Chevy fans I would encourage you to reach out to any Danny and TRD fans that you know today. We have never suffered such a devastating moment ourselves and we have have enjoyed every one the 730-something Chevy cup championships. But try to have some empathy for them while they are grieving. I know it is hard to relate to with all the Chevy championships we have enjoyed. Personally I have listened to some Hank Williams to try to put myself in their shoes and feel for them today.

May Ty hear your pleas and favor fans of another, lesser Toyota driver.

The caliber of drivers Nascar has these days compared to days of old I wonder about the difference.

It will go ignored because, "He can't perform or whatever."

Denny Hamlin has been brilliant during this playoff run. Worst finish was 13th at the Roval, he honestly did not put a foot wrong. That DSQ from Pocono was killer.
Apparently with Brad’s DQ Ross would’ve beaten Denny on a tiebreaker anyways without the slingshot. The real killer was the track position they lost on the final pit stop. Then he’s mixing it up amongst the top 3.

I wonder if this move would’ve even worked with the old car? I actually doubt it. The Next Gen cars are tanks and barely get any body damage. All he did was scrape the wrap off the side. Gen 6 would have a flat side and probably 2 flat tires by corner exit.
It wouldn’t have worked because of the transmission.

Who knows, who cares. Amigo said Chastain shifted into 5th and hammered down thru three and four. Suarez said everybody had been running third to 4th or just forth gear in the race.

I can't believe we have to wait six months before we get to watch the entire field full send it into turn 3 at Martinsville. 😥

Can't imagine what the guy who paints the wall at Martinsville was thinking today.

Hopefully the track gave him the day off to sleep away that hangover.
There's a video taken Sunday of the wall by someone walking through 3 and 4. Darned if I can find it again but it's Halloween creepy.

Eh. He still gets the 2 spots he needs, sans the flat tires.
With the Gen 6 in high gear and the engine banging against the limiter, where would the extra speed come from?

Nobody was hitting the chip after their traditional entry point.

Of course, I'm just answering conjecture with more of the same.

Chastain was travelling at a much higher speed than anyone else ... enabled by the “extra legs” afforded by use of his 5th gear. This is not conjecture. He said he changed gear.

That option was not available in Gen 6 cars ... that’s my point and how I answered the question posed by Efisher131 in post 814.

I'm not disputing the availability of an additional gear.

Conjecture is stating the move would not have worked.

You’re not disputing its availability and you’re not acknowledging its effect.

As you say, the comparison is conjecture ... impossible to prove in the present. Imagine a world where the option to “turn off damage” was a thing.

Extra Legs plural. Don't forget no brakes and standing on the gas at the same time in your conjecturing

One of the factors of the equation.

All things being equal, and all of Sunday's competitors being equipped with a T-10, Chastain still gains at least 2 spots.

If the cars were still equipped with T-10's we would find out who can REALLY drive on the road courses.

Who is asking them to change rules after 35 races? Regardless, who would be upset if they made the new rule this week? Is he implying there's a chance someone will try riding the wall at Phoenix?
The TV people would be upset if it was outlawed. There could be a half a million casuals tune in to see if that is going to happen again. ;)

I thought we were done speculating. Apparently not.

How many cars did Chastain have to pass to gain 2 finishing positions?
