Cup RACE thread --- Texas

Also, since you seem to be back @The Nature Boy I just want to point out, they have been times I called out Chase, or other HMS Drivers for their driving, when I thought they were at fault. So much like you and your calling out Ross when he drivers over his head, I do as well. I just didn't see today as anything more than a racing accident, and would've said the same if Ross did it to William. I will admit before I saw the replay, I would've 100% said Ross was a jackass, but after I saw what happened, I would've changed my tune, and defended Ross, another thing I've done before.

Definitely looks a bit more questionable from William's onboard.

Any change of hearts after seeing this?

So after seeing the replay, Ross was already wrecking and Byron just finished it.

I got that wrong.
I didn't look at Ross's on board, he was losing the rear.

Came down, Byron came up. Racing deal

William didn’t check up, but I probably wouldn’t expect him to on the last lap with all the guys stacked up behind him. Ross for sure got out of shape in a big way and had to lift, and the closing rate was substantial. Not entirely sure he blended with the wall on exit as he normally would either.

Ross was loose, Byron was pushing and Kez was coming down low and the pay window was wide open.

Yep. Chastain was already wrecking, Byron just went ahead and finished the job.

Ain't no lifting on the last lap.
William pretty much said that in pit road interview after. I think I saw it in Estepp's wrap up video. He said "I had a run and it's the last lap."

Man...Just taking a look at the board this AM as it was a busy weekend. I did not watch the race until around 10:00pm last night. Obviously great as a Chase fan to see him back in victory lane and get that monkey off his back but I will say this race is an example of why we should not necessarily put so much weight on wins in this sport. Chase drove an AWESOME race for sure and nailed those last 2 restarts but to me if you run that race 10 time over you would get 10 different results and yesterday was just finally his day. What stands out to me is that at one pint around halfway through the race, I told my wife that I had not seen Chase drive this aggressively in a long time. Within about 10 minutes of that my father texted me as he was also watching it on DVR and said almost the same exact thing. I am not sure that the car was really THAT good so I am left wondering where this aggression came from. Either way Chase must be so relieved to get that win and I will be very curious about his attitude and confidence is now.

Other thoughts....Life can truly be amazing and make you just say "wow" at times. I did not connect why Chase was doing the "Polish" victory lap (are we still allowed to say that today?) until his interview and it just gave me the feels. I remember being a 13 year old kid in November of 1992 watching that race where AK beat Bill for the title and being so let down about it. To fast forward all these years later and see Bill's son winning in the Hooters car and mentioning that race and paying tribute to the guy who beat his dad...man that is just class and what sports are all about.

Anyway - Another thought on the race is that it does seem really clear that the 5 car is all trimmed out for qualifying and their attitude with such a premium on track position is to start with it every race and not lose it. I have to say it's hard to argue with that because it was REALLY hard to pass yesterday and seems to be an issue everywhere. No one passed their way to the front. Those who did it, did it on good strategy and luck. The funny thing for me was my dad texting me after qualifying abed complaining about Chase being so far back and his teammate on the pole and I said "Relax, they missed it a little in qualifying. Last week they were on the front row and Byron started way further back and ended up winning the race."

Last thing - What is all this comparison between Chase and Denny? Just not sure what brought that on all the sudden. Denny does win at slightly better pace than case overall as Chase's win percentage is about 6% and Denny's is about 8%. Through about this many starts in their careers, Denny had 23 wins and Chase 19. What is the big deal here? It is close and they are both really good. Not sure what the argument is. I am sure Denny would trade those wins he has over Chase for that title. LOL.

Denny has had an all time great career, to be fair, and he's been a top 3 driver in this series since 2020. If he does pull out a championship at some point before retirement, I really don't think it'll be hated, and it'll be a career that even Chase, Larson or Byron would have a tough time matching.

BUT, we can't predict the future.

In fairness to The Chain Gang guns, they are driving in a quasi-spec era.

Racing accident on the last lap. That's all I see, nothing egregious to be seen here.
Anybody notice the 9 driving away? This was a race for 2nd, 3rd,and 4th. The move of the race was when Chastain pushed Elliott ahead of Hamlin and Elliott was able to keep the lead and win the race. Great battles.

Bobby bought it up, for some reason, I don’t know why, but when he did, I’m gonna give him the numbers and show him when compared in a fair and fitting way, they are closer than he wants to admit. Even his question about who has the most wins in the new car, is closer than he will want to admit. All of which Denny slightly edges out Chase, but not by much.

Larson extends his lead, Elliott up 2 spots.

It is important that we keep this for eternity. Forever.
Not sure I'm following where you're trying to take it. I wasn't defending Byron at all. He dumped the 1. Or at least finished him off.

There is no question that Denny edges Chase and if asked right now who has had the better career I have to give the nod to Denny championship or no. The longevity and top-5 rate are pretty staggering. As you said though - it's close and it's close despite Chase going through this recent lull that hopefully is over. If Chase keeps winning and getting top-5's even at his current rate though for the next 10-15 seasons (he is only 28 after all) then I'd say Chase had the better career but we are arguing over who is better between 2 that could go down as all-time greats. Pretty pointless really. They are both really good. LOL.

I was at the bar enjoying myself after working nonstop for two weeks straight. (IYKYK)

Right after Chase's interview, the bartender turned the hockey games on.

I would love to watch a cup race at a bar but around here their is 0% chance of a bar playing one.

Auto racing is popular on here, obviously, but it’s still not very common to run into racing fans out in public. Thus, most sports bars don’t show them. Heck, I once drove to several different bars looking for the Eldora truck race. I finally just asked an empty bar to turn on the race.

Looks like the “treaded” portion (face) of the tire
over-heated and separated itself from the layers of radially applied structural elements directly beneath it.

Or it was damaged by the fender.

This is probably why Blaney didn't have much to say about Preece turning him.

I think he said something to the effect of he didn’t have a problem with retaliation, but he wasn’t sure he deserved to be outright punted and was more expecting to be moved when Preece got to him.
