2024 United States Grand Prix

There were at least three other incidents of the same kind that were investigated during the grand prix, and probably more that went unnoted. It just draws more attention when it happens between contenders and is on the broadcast. I saw some yesterday in the sprint as well. You’ll get that at any place that doesn’t have walls, grass, or gravel immediately off the side of the track.
Following up on this.

Tsunoda was penalized at the same corner (T12) for overtaking on the inside of Albon and forcing him off track. +5 seconds rather than the standard +10 as it was deemed not deliberate and Yuki was in control of his car at all times.

Russell was penalized at T12 for overtaking on the inside at T12 and forcing Bottas off track. +5 rather than +10 for the same reasons above.

Gasly was penalized for overtaking Albon on the outside at T15. Determined he was level at the apex but fell slightly behind prior to exit, went off track and rejoined ahead of Albon. +5 rather than +10 because he lost the right to the corner only briefly and by a small margin.

Piastri also got +5 in the Sprint for overtaking Gasly on the inside at T12 and forcing him off track. Once again avoided +10 for the same reasons as the first two incidents.

The letter of the law outlines what you’re allowed to do as a defender and as an attacker. That doesn’t necessarily mean the spirit of the law is entirely reflected in it, or that the application of the law will always be consistent.

Aston was shockingly bad yesterday. I don't know if everyone else brought upgrade and they didn't or if they brought another failed upgrade but they were dreadfully slow and the second-slowest team, only ahead of Sauber.

They had the second-best car at the start of 2023 and have only gone backwards since.
It seems like they can't figure out their issues and are now throwing all their faith behind Newey.
Aston are pretty anonymous. I don’t even notice them anymore now that Lance has stopped crashing for a good while, which is at least a decent bright spot. But they’re just totally irrelevant unless Alonso is complaining about something. The contrast between them and McLaren starting from 2023 preseason testing is pretty fascinating.

What caught my eye was the hefty fine.
I think it’s the fourth time it’s happened in the past two seasons. Australia and Brazil last year, Canada and COTA this year. All part of the risk in having massively growing crowds, but the FIA is signaling that the promoters need to put an end to it before something really dumb/bad happens.
