Storyline – Cup teams on well known tire set-up at Phoenix: While this is not the same tire set-up Cup teams ran at Phoenix Raceway earlier in the season, they are well familiar with the combination of left- and right-side tires they will run this weekend. Phoenix falls into a group of tracks that are one mile and under, giving Goodyear the opportunity to standardize a tire set-up and give teams more laps to build up a notebook how it will react in race conditions. They can add to that with three sets of tires for a 50-minute practice session on Friday.

“This is an important weekend for the Cup Series, being the championship race at Phoenix,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing. “Teams have a lot of experience on this tire set-up, having run it several times already this season. Even compared to what we ran at Phoenix earlier in the season – with the same tread compounds and just a construction update on the right-side – these teams know what to expect with this set-up. With everything that is at stake this Sunday, having that comfort level with the tire set-up will help teams focus on maximizing their performance.”

Notes – Construction update to right-side on Phoenix tire set-up: Being on the 18-inch bead diameter tire, NASCAR Cup teams will run a different tire set-up than those in the Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series at Phoenix this week . . . this is left-side tire code debuted at Phoenix in March . . . this right-side code is different than the one run at Phoenix-1 (construction update), though Cup teams have run it several times at other tracks this season . . . . Cup teams have run this same tire set-up at Iowa and New Hampshire, as well as in the “Prime” set-up at North Wilkesboro and Richmond-2 . . . with this 18-inch tire, and its lower profile sidewall, NASCAR Cup cars do not run inner liners in any of their tires.

Wet Weather Tires – Goodyear brings white-lettered “wets” to Phoenix: Goodyear will bring its 18-inch wet weather radial tires to Phoenix for the NASCAR Cup cars, should NASCAR determine that conditions warrant . . . Cup teams will have a maximum of 4 sets of wet weather tires for the event . . . NASCAR Cup teams last ran the wet weather tire in competition at Chicago in July . . . in addition to the obvious difference of a tread pattern versus Goodyear’s dry weather “slick” tires, the “Goodyear” and “Eagle” lettering on the sidewalls of the wet weather tires is white, not the standard yellow.

I have a suspicion the rest of the field is going to stay extra away from the final 4 this weekend... more so than usual...

I'm really pulling for a non-championship driver* to win, preferably Busch, Truex, or one of the SHR guys. If this is another race where the final four are running up front most of the race, it's not going to look good after last week's aluminum folding chairs. I hope this isn't one where the other drivers are tippy-toeing around like mobile chicanes. They have final finishing spots on the line too.

* there has to be a more convenient term than 'non-championship driver'. 'Ineligible', I guess, but that doesn't say what they're ineligible for. Too many other possible terms carry a connotation of failure.

Watch Bell win... :XXROFL:

I remember one year when it didn’t even seem like any of the final four were ever running worse than 5th in the entire race. Obviously I want Byron to win, but I wouldn’t mind Busch winning. He really deserves it after his extremely frustrating season.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the biggest clown show possible. A wreck that takes them all out or 3 of the 4 out, or maybe they all run 15th or worse.

Go 22 or 45.

Looks like Ty had a rough start to the weekend

I liked how last year’s race played out, where several non-playoff drivers competed hard verses being rolling billboards, allowing the champ 4 cars easy passes. The last year we went to the Homestead championship, it was clear nobody was to race the contenders hard. Amazingly all 4 were right up front all day. That’s bullcrap. Didn’t go back.

Looking at the schedule for the 3 days and just shake my head. Looks like the trucks get no practice today and just qualify. Cup and Xfinity get practice today and qualify tomorrow. Why don't the trucks get any practice, especially for a race this big? Makes no sense.

Not as big a deal, but why can't Xfinity and Cup practice and qualify on the same day? Seems Nascar is never happy if they aren't constantly changing things.

The trucks got practice, just no coverage.

I'm guessing you were looking at the TV schedule. See @Magicmiler's complete weekend schedule in post #7 above (as he's posted every weekend; thanks!).
