2025 Chinese Grand Prix

Hamilton sprint pole. Gotta admit I didn't see that coming.

Remember when the #1 Lotus was the best car and the #2 was the worst? We're kind of back to that with Red Bull.

Looks like some teams are having logistical issues on the turn from Melbourne to Shanghai.

Stupid question but do F1 teams have only a single car for each driver? No other cars in the pipeline in the shop? If so, is that because of rules or some other reason? How do they handle it when a car gets totaled, build a new one from scratch in four days?

Thanks.

Lewis Hamilton’s stunning pole for Ferrari in Sprint Qualifying has certainly silenced his critics. Despite Ferrari bringing no upgrades to China, their pace looks strong. Only four teams have introduced updates, including Williams, and I am excited to see how Carlos Sainz performs in his second race with his new team.

A complete chassis takes 8-10 weeks to build from the ground up, iirc. So teams will usually carry three chassis and a load of spares. In the cost cap era, teams have to be more cost-conscious of their development and build programs. Ideally when you roll out an update you’d like to have multiple sets of it on hand at the track as well, but sometimes it’s only possible to have one set and then spares of the old spec part.

Three different teams within a tenth at the top of sprint qualifying, could bode for a pretty interesting weekend.

Three chassis per team. Not per driver, right?

Yeah. A smaller team may not even have a full spare built up at the start of the season, as happened with Williams last year. Albon crashed in practice at Australia and the team decided to sacrifice Sargeant’s car to allow him to race since they didn’t have a spare chassis built up yet.

Hamilton gets his first “win” with Ferrari in the Sprint, Piastri passed Verstappen late for P2. Norris manages only P8 after a clumsy first lap mistake sent him back to 9th.

Lawson is gonna be in trouble awfully soon if he isn’t already. I wonder if the kid with 11 whole grand prix starts to his name wasn’t the right guy for the job?

Two races in and Hamilton has already gotten the full Ferrari experience. The first double DSQ in the Scuderia’s history…simply incredible. Not like the race was particularly good to them to begin with, but points are points.

Verstappen/Leclerc wheel-to-wheel battles always entertain, and they tend to be very clean as well. Lots of respect between those two guys. I don’t think there’s anyone Max loves racing against more than Charles.

Excellent day for Haas after a disappointing Melbourne.

The most complete race weekend yet for Piastri, pretty steady and controlled throughout.
