Cup RACE thread --- Darlington

My take was that Bubba punted Larson when the 5 braked after Reddick got into the fence.
I disagree, first, Reddick hitting the wall was no more than anyone else did during the race. Including the time Blaney did it with Bubba right behind him earlier in the race. Second, Bubba had multiple lanes to avoid Larson... and the time. Either Bubba is inept, or he took the opportunity. Based on his car owner... I would say the latter.

It’s ok to disagree.

Wait a minute, Larson passed Bubba just before the incident? My apologies to Kyle. I incorrectly -assumed- the #5 was a slower car that Bubba came up on. I withdraw my complaint that he had no business being up on the primary racing line.

Now it looks to me like just one of them racin' deals.

As many of these racing deals are, it will always be open to interpretation.

Larson brakes in front the 23 due to the 45 hitting the wall. Bubba may have had a lane to avoiding hitting the 5 but I’m not going to make that argument as that’s hard to say. My guy braked and got hit while altering the course of the finish. I still maintain he had every right to be out there, there no rule saying pack it up and go home if the car is fixed in the allotted time and maintains speed . Many races each year are altered or mucked up may be a better word due to stupidity within the last 10 laps. This week it’s Larson’s turn, next time it will be someone else. Such is life in Cup racing

Boy look at this beauty!! Bobby Allison’s Nova. Picture doesn’t do it justice. Especially the one with my finger in the damn way

I'm confused at what you're showing me? Cause your next post, you even mention that Larson braking. Like, that can't really be blamed on Bubba. Now by the rule, yes he can be out there. I just don't see the point in it when you're that many laps down. You're not going to gain anything. Maybe if it's like Spotter said for R&D, well fair, that could be helpful for next time they come here later in the year. I'm just mad it caused Denny to win lol.

News and notes from today- Ol Dave Blaney (quiet! its throwback weekend) would carry speed into 3 better than everyone on the track. If he needed to rip the top he could or he could wrap the bottom all the way through 4. He had the whole Earnhardt tower smacking their tables and standing and cheering, the last caution gutted the crowd including me, I think I even threw my plate of BBQ ribs, potato salad and homemade Banana pudding at the suite window! Seriously though, we all watched him drive his nutts off coming from 15th and just blowing them into the weeds

I couldn’t add to my post with the tweet as time had expired

Short answer.... YES!
I'd love to think that Bubba's loyalty to Toyota exceeds his loyalty to his buddy.....but I don't think so...but I do understand that this is a Denny win, and we simply have to have something to bitch about....so, carry on.

Love this passion Spotter.

I am still processing the weekend here and the more I have reflected on this race I just feel it's an example of what's wrong with the sport right now. Was there one on track pass for the lead other than Blaney at the end? If there was I missed it. Clean air means too much. Byron held a 5-second lead all day and once he (finally) got back in traffic he could not really make up time.

Larson fans should rejoice because I am going to Bristol this coming weekend and he will NEVER have that bad a day if I am there, It's just how things work for me. LOL. Now I have no issue with Kyle winning while I am there despite what a few here think but I just don't want to see a stunk up show and I am sure that's what we will get. I continue to not be able to make sense of Kyle at times. I have said it over and over - he pushes too hard when the car is not there. Wrecking on lap 3 of a 400 mile race is just not something you see the best driver do. I know he has that win which is good but that was a race where everything went the way it needed to and he took a 5th-6th place car to victory lane kind of like Hamlin did yesterday. Outside of that, thewy seem to be a little off where they have been in years past. Long season though.

On that note - this is why I hate all the weight on winning. Hamlin and crew executed perfectly at the end and did what they needed to do but really had no business winning this race. I feel for Byron and Blaney - Especially Blaney who drove the wheels off the car to get the lead only for the caution to come out and his crew lose him the lead.

It's hard not to have sympathy for Blaney being a Chase fan since Chase's crew cost him TWICE. First they fall form 10th to 23rd after stage one because of a slow stop and then they catch the break they needed to get all that track position back only to have to make a second stop for a loose wheel. Interestingly enough when Chase came off pit road before they had to come in again for a second stop he was right with the 11 and had been running similar speeds to the 11 all day so who knows what may have happened. This is 2 weeks in a row the crew has cost him a shot and I have to give Chase props for his patient driving and staying calm. When AG told him they had to come in again he just said fairly calmly "you're kidding....Do you want me to come now?" Nothing else was said. I am not sure how long HMS can go without making a change though. This is getting tiring. I have no idea who Chase was able to finish 8th and likely would have been 6th if not for the last caution buit all anyone can talk about is how they aren't winning. How on earth can they win with all the put issues? Never gonna happen.

Oddly after leading 3/4 of the race Byron was fortunate to finish 2nd. He was 5th and might've slipped to 6th had the race "finished naturally".

It's always been hard to pass at Darlington. It's extremely narrow and its awkward shape prevents you from setting up a car that excels through all four corners

During stage 3, Harvick and Bowyer were discussing how much action in the middle and back of the field doesn't make it to the broadcast.

And that's why it's a driver's track.
Same ones every year, they don't learn. :idunno:
Hopefully Larson learned you don't straddling the transition from banking to apron through turn 2, at least not after only two laps. Hopefully others will learn from his experience.

I know - I just never remember clean air meaning as much as it did in this race at Darlington because usually the tires off set it.

Where that's true... this was different. No one has ever led the way Byron did in that race..

Ned Jarrett won at Darlington by 14 laps.
  • Ned Jarrett won the 1965 Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway by 14 laps.
  • Buck Baker was second, 14 laps down.
  • Darel Dieringer was third. He and fourth-place Roy Mayne were 19 laps behind.
