Goodyear Racing Notes
World Wide Technology Raceway

The Goodyear Racing Eagle tire setup that awaits NASCAR Cup Series teams at World Wide Technology Raceway (WWTR) this weekend is new to the Illinois track but already familiar to teams, having debuted at Iowa Speedway a month ago.

These new left and right side tires were initially developed with Iowa’s fast cornering speeds in mind and are also the product of a June tire test at WWTR, where drivers Erik Jones, Brad Keselowski, and Kyle Larson tested them.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series visits WWTR for the first time in 15 years, giving many drivers a new challenge. However, this Goodyear tire setup was used by Xfinity Series teams at Phoenix Raceway in March. It’s also the same setup Goodyear brought to WWTR last year for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

“Despite being 1.25 miles in length, we treat World Wide Technology Raceway more like an intermediate track,” said Rick Heinrich, Goodyear NASCAR product manager. “The Goodyear Racing Eagle tires we have chosen for the NASCAR Cup Series this weekend have already been tested here, and raced at Iowa Speedway.”

Hamlin on pole at Gateway

He does this often, practices in the teens or twenty's, then pops up on the pole.

I am no fan of his at all, but I wouldn't cry if he got the Cup this year. He has definitely proved he is worthy of it.

240 laps, 300 miles. This is an unjustifiably short race for a 1.25-mile track.

For some reason I thought it was 300 laps (375 miles) which is still a relatively short race.

Additionally, the "championship" race at Phoenix is ridiculously short (312 laps / 312 miles).

Oh, but wait, the Phoenix race earlier in the season is a "500" right ? :XXROFL:

Flat tracks have always been this way, because they race slower neither Gateway, New Hampshire, or Phoenix need more laps. They still average roughly the same time to race.

Been saying that from Day One, and that's been my only objection to having the finale there. Fortunately, that will be fixed next year.

It is 300 miles

Both Phoenix races are 312 miles (312 laps) but the "500" designation as in the Shriners Children 500 comes from it being approximately five hundred kilometers (502.115 to be precise).

imo, coming up with a somewhat fabricated reason to call it a "500" is a stretch if not laughable.

NASCAR's only acknowledgement of the metric system.

He spoke to that on his podcast. He is only looking for "feel" in Practice. Because SOU get all caught up in Denny's BS, it gets lost that his racing IQ is extremely high. While I will always hate the SMT stuff, he is sitting on pole because the other drivers that went before him built the data base for his lap. Great stuff.

Nobody in cup right now has a higher racing IQ. Denny says himself he doesn’t have the natural talent of Larson, Bell, Blaney, etc. and is only there because he works so hard at his craft. I don’t like how much of a hypocrite he is on the race track but he deserves a championship.

Does he deserve a championship? Yes. Do I want him to win one? No.

Not sure what to expect of this race today. I like this track overall, but the Gen 7 tends to suck at flat, one-groove ovals. Guess we'll see...

On a side note: two less than 1.5mile, but more than a mile, egg-shaped ovals back to back.

Just something I find interesting...

Made it 4 laps before he lost the lead. I guess next week @Revman will tell us Hamlin is playing 3D chess.
