The 1996 Southern 500 is the race I'm thinking of regarding Stricklin. He led a race high 143 laps but his car started to overheat late in the battle. Gordon passed him with 15 to go. Stricklin hung on for second.

7 Solid but I struggle with all the "chaos"; some is perfectly fine. They need to speed up the cautions/race because the last 10 laps take forever.

I'm with you. A lot of these guys do not have the prerequisite skill to truly compete with the typical finesse that road racing requires. However, the "fish out of water" aspect creates the type of racing/chaos that the networks want. The guys who have skill usually separate themselves quickly...
