    California Speedway Demo / Rebuild

Turning a hot lap in practice or even qualifying on a plate track mostly comes down to the quality of your car. There’s not much you can do to show your talents there. But you still have to clear the baseline level of skill to drive a race car. After all, Cody Ware is closer in talent to prime...

Derrike Cope once won a Dover race on speed. I am going to use that one example to prove that Cope was a better driver than Dale Earnhardt and Darrell Waltrip. Sometimes flukes happen. Hut Stricklin once dominated a Southern 500. You’re either being obtuse or willfully ignorant. Cletus is...

And the survival and luck element often comes because certain drivers run out of talent. If plate racing were so easily, we wouldn’t regularly see big pileups. The big pileups happen because of how difficult it is to run in close quarters at 180+ MPH.

Real racing is being the first person to complete a predetermined distance. Different types of racing takes different types of talent. I don’t like cookie cutter mile and a halves or Michigan/Fontana style tracks but I wouldn’t denigrate the talent it takes to be successful there.

I will never understand how some people can think it takes no talent to run in close quarters to other drivers at 180+ MPH. That just defies logic.

No man, this thread has convinced me that Fontana was the best track ever and that all tracks pale in comparison. Tearing down Fontana would be like if the Green Bay Packers tore down Lambeau Field.

I’m saying that I generally don’t like races at tracks larger than Darlington.

Well 1.366 miles, I forgot about Darlington.

Honestly plate tracks are the only tracks over a mile where I consistently enjoy the racing. Unrestrict the engines and it’s just a 2.5 mile Fontana and Michigan where the cars are strung out. I like my racing in close quarters.

I will respectfully disagree. Daytona is one of the Crown Jewels of NASCAR. I would feel the same way about losing Bristol, Martinsville, Darlington, or Charlotte. There are certain tracks that form the bedrock of what NASCAR is and has been. We need to preserve those tracks, not tear them...

Losing Daytona would be catastrophic for the preservation of our sport’s history.

    NASCAR 2025 BOLD Prediction Game

Todd Bodine has been retired for a while now.

My concern is about the warehouse outside of turns 1 and 2. I hope they’ve had their engineers do their due diligence. Either way, NASCAR should provide some kind of update.

Those locals have as much insight as you and me. Somehow it looks like they’ve saved the blueprint they planned to save. Turns 1 and 2 are going to be tight as hell though and I think NASCAR is being ambitious there. I think there’s a 25% chance of survival.

    Silly Season 2025

I’m happy to see JR Motorsports in the 500 but not a big fan of #40 but I guess any other numbers with ties to Junior are tied up right now.

    Silly Season 2025

On the other hand, plate tracks require pretty quick reflexes and one bad move can trigger a 20 car accident at very high speeds. Maybe there should be an objective test that drivers over a certain age have to pass but NASCAR isn’t wrong here.

One overlooked factor here is that construction costs in SoCal are about to balloon. When money starts rolling in for fire recovery, there’s going to be a lot of demand.

I think NASCAR should make an announcement on this either way. I support the short track idea, but NASCAR is dragging their ass with it and it appears may have sold too much land to make it viable.

I find it weird that he’s not approved for Trucks. He can’t be that much worse than some of the wrecking balls and moving chicanes down there.

The biggest problem is SoCal is the price of land. Ontario and Riverside closed for similar reasons. This is a problem that goes back decades.
