I'd keep the old HP until it falls apart. The newer stuff is made from plastic that breaks as soon as the warranty is out. If you have a wireless router, I'd just use a parallel to USB cable, and run it right through the router.

For AC the black wire is usually hot, and the white is negative. On DC, the RED is usually hot, and black is 'negative'. The orangish one is probably the ground wire. NOTE...without a test light, I wouldn't bet on that 100%, hence the word 'usually'.
