On Speed Channel's, NASCAR Live, Bob Dillner reported that NASCAR officials are considering increasing the number of drivers making the chase next year from 10 to 12. He said NASCAR is also looking at a new points system for chase participants.(9-9-2006)

i'm all for more points awarded for the race winner..but about 12 drivers being in the chase not so sure...it would take the drama and suspense out of it IMO.

I agree, especially about giving more points to the race winner and for winning th pole.

The Chase drivers do need a different system. Teams have already figured out you can points race over the last ten like the old system as long as you don't have any trouble.

I thought it was announced that there would no changes next year to the format?? I may be wrong.

Personally I don't like the format as it is. I guess I am too much of a traditionalist. I liked the way it used to be. If anything though I do think there needs to be more points awarded for winning races.

I'll agree with more points for winning. How about points for the pole? How about an automatic in with 5 or more wins.

and auto in for the defending champion if he's in the same car with the same team

Well I am not sure if I agree with more points for the pole. We often see a guy that starts on the pole drops like a rock to the back of the field. I think teams are rewarded enough for the pole by getting pit selection.

I do think the guy with the most wins of the season needs to be in the chase as well.

remember that as of right now, THERE ARE NO points for qualifying at all

I don't like letting the winner of most races in....

Simply b/c I can easily imagine a situation where someone with 3 wins could be let in and still have a completely rotten season...

This will still be a popularity contest as long as NASCAR and big money is involved. We already have seen what they thought about the fact that Kahne might not make the chase by talking about this whole mess. If Gordon and Earnhardt hadn't made it again this year, I am very sure they would make changes to the format next year. Brian France is beginning to make the whole thing a mess and he still wants to make changes.

Sure there is. At the very least, last place points.
Thinking like Morgan Sheppard, are you?

The only points truly awards for qualifying is owner points, which you get whether you make the field or not.

They need to award more points for winning, but I don't agree with awarding points for the pole. The pole doesn't really have that much to do with how good a person will run in a race and also would then drive up the cost of racing some more. I would also like to see them do away with the 5 points for leading a lap under caution. Get the 5 points for under green or not at all. Actually I still think the chase is unfair not only to the ones 11th and worse but also to the points leaders. By only making a 5 point separation you are making a articfically close race. With 10 races if you have bad luck in one race you seriously hurt your chances of winning the title.

and why not? maybe there should be a sliding scale of points for qualifying? that way teams that setup just for the race would spend more time on qualifying. not that i advocate this idea but it would be interesting to at least see what would happen.....

qualifying should not award points... it's simply NOT "the race". It's only to determine who CAN be in the race, and therefore who is eligible for points.

You simply can't award points every time someone does something well outside of 'the race'... "First trailer at the track, 5 points to the 48 team..."

Your reward is getting to start at the front of the line!

If i'm not mistaken wasn't there a time when leading at half way was worth 5 or 10 bonus points? I think also that more points should be awarded for the win. Maybe award bonus points for 3 or more consecutive poles by the same driver, something with a little twist.

mmmm I think that was the "Gatorade" money, like 5,000dollars or something like that and 50,000 for leading the points half way through the season. I could be wrong...it was a long time ago

Gatorade pays $10,000 for leading the most laps regardless of finish. There are all types of contingency awards that drivers can take advantage of. ie. the Petty's don't participate in the Bud award or any of the demon alcohol awards.
