:EEEEK: Heard on the radio this evening. That the Atlanta Braves just sign a contrack with Greg Maddox for 14.7 Million dollars for one year. Some of you baseball people out there. Is any sports figure worth that much.

Well, Maddux is a hell of a pitcher and that's a ton of dough.

Baseball salaries are out of control.

what it really comes down to is does Greg Maddux bring in 14.7milllion dollars worth of sales? no not even close, what it amounts to is rich white owners constructing their egos and their own personal ultimate fantasy team. Yeah I think baseball is allright, very challanging in its own way, a guy hits the ball 3 out of 10 times is considered good, but its not what people want, so as long as there is big fat rich white guys willing to push the dough baseball will survive just fine the way it is.

I find it curious that he signed for that much when there wasn't much interest in him by any other teams when he was a free agent. Basically the Braves were bidding against themselves.

But to answer your question...Only if he makes the difference between winning the World Series or not.

I was thinking the same thing. They are certainly a playoff team with or without him. He may make the difference in home field advantage or something similarly unmeasurable. I don't think he will, but obviously the guy who signs the checks thinks it is worth the gamble. Oh well, It's not my money.

Philladelphia just spent like $80 million on Jim Thome. I fiugre with his recent increase in back problems and playing first base everyday for them (since there is no DH in the National League) he is destined for quite a bit of time on the DL. Not to mention his age. That is an awful lot of money to pay a guy who isn't playing.
