The technology to keep the windows in and the hood on are much better, but the technology to make a good race is much worse. Did you notice there was no big pack of cars? I think Schrader did better because the driver was a bigger factor than the equipment.
Back then (and I am only talking 13 yrs ago) it was probably more 60% driver 40% equipment where now it is more 60% equipment and 40% driver.
