1992 points chase

Racing one Matt Mclaughlin

I wonder if Nascar looked at this year when they analyzed the new points system. This is the year that Kulwicki won the title.
He wouldn't have won in 1992 under the 2004 points system(play-off).

Dale Earnhardt Sr. would have only 4 Championships,Terry Labonte would have 0 Championships and Jeff Gordon would have just 2 Championships, really some twists there

I still don't like the new system, the more I hear about the specifics, the more I hate it ;) Whether NASCAR acknowledges it or not,in every year where the Champion that's crowned by NASCAR,if the driver's are different,Everyone will be aware of Whom the "real" Champion would've been under the old points system,it sucks IMHO :p

I am not quite sure why everyone is comparing the new system to past championships. You can't. No of us have a clue as to how a champion would have raced under the new format. Its pointless to compare the pass to the new system.

Now instead of racing the first 26 races and riding around in the last 10, they will ride around in the first 26 and race the last 10. ;)

Agreed.

Example:
There is no way Matt Kenseth raced as hard Brian Vickers in their last race of the season...

If the stakes were different, the races would be different.

They can't just ride around too easily,or They'll find Themselves out of the play-offs altogether and no chance at a Cup ;) Also the race winner will get at least 5 more points than 2nd place finisher, doesn't sound like much, but take 5 points times a theoretical 26 races and that would equal 130 points, not including any bonus points here either.

This is true. The author points out that information in the article. But with that being said, I hope nascar made the same assumptions to the information that they analyzed.

Can you imagine what the world would be like if you could say "Winston Cup Champion Kyle Petty"?

I would be pretty dang happy if I could say that! Kyle did have alot of good runs in the early 90s with the Sabco Mello Yello cars

I was originally for the playoff system but the more I look at it and think about I am beginning to change my mind. What happens when a driver who doesn't get a DNF for the first 26 races and is first in the points and then gets collected in a wreck or gets a flat in one of the last 10 races and it costs them the championship.

Another thought, after the first 26 races will teams dump all their resources on a top ten team and then the other cars on the team not in the top 10 suffer. Not that they don't do that now but I think it will be more noticable. That should sit really well with drivers, teams and sponsors.

How are the sponsors going to like it when only those ten teams plus the race leader get all the TV time?

Oh wait, that's what TV has done for the last several years anyway.
