This is a tuff one Fireball Roberts is my hometown hero.

A few things you may not know about Roberts,

First off his nickname had nothing to do with racing it came from his early baseball pitching career I've heard he had a heck of a Fastball.
Roberts is one of the few drivers that Won at the Daytona Beach course and at the Daytona Speedway, he won a 150 miler at The Beach in 1948 at age 19 and one of the few that Won both Daytona races in a season in 1962 he Won the Daytona 500 and the Firecracker 400.
With just over 200 races he had 32 poles and 33 Wins in whats now Cup on Dirt, asphalt and Superspeedway tracks.
I'll always remember him as the driver of Smokey Yunicks Black and Gold #13's. he Won 3 poles in a row at Daytona in that car.
Roberts death after the 1964 Charlotte World 600 led to the development of fuel cells and fire retardent driver suits. Roberts himself was not wearing a fire retardent suit at the time because the chemicals that suits where dip in at the time caused problems with his asthmatic condition.

I debated this one more than any so far. Wallace or Roberts, Roberts or Wallace?

I'm tired of Crusty...

Wallace dominated the late 80's and 90's, only being trumped by Ironhead. No comparison with the others.

I reluctantly went with Fireball.

I was torn between picking him or Rusty. Rusty is one of the best short track divers ever.

He was good in the ASA days too driving for the #66 for the 'Raging Cajun' Nicky Preda-(something). Still not sure if I was right or wrong on this one.

Fireball was the first driver anybody told me about, and the way the old timers spoke of his abilities, you could tell they were inspired, and cherished Fireballs memory. That prevailed for me.
