Seriously, people are picking Mark Martin over Jimmie Johnson? Mark Martin's a nice guy and all but better than Jimmie?

Kinda skews the outcome then, don't ya think? I'm in no way, shape or form a Jimmie Johnson fan but his talent is undeniable?

yep, the topic is the greatest sprint cup driver, not most popular sprint cup driver.

Maybe andy should skew every pole. There's always that one guy out there that just has to do it.

:bsflag:

Maybe Marks
Four ASA Championships, with 22 WINS
Five IROC Championships
Second in Cup points Five Times
Fourtynine Nationwide WINS
SEVEN Truck Series WINS
should also be considered?

Don't sell him short Mark's a Racers Racer!

This was a hard one for me and I guess that's what it's all about. I'm picking Johnson, but just barely. We are talking about who is the greatest driver here and Jimmie's stats are great, better than most, but he has yet to finish his career. Who knows, he could just become the man with the most cup championships. Now wouldn't that tick off a bunch of old cup fans? But again, Marky has had a very great career.

I like Mark, he has always seemed like a first class person, and he is great as a driver.

But IMO Johnson was just to good to overlook in this case.

I voted for Jimmy also, just wanted to remind everyone that Mark wasnt always what he's become the past few years. This coming year with him driving for MWR may very well cause me to turn my head and wipe my eye :(

mark's runnerup finishes were to earhardt (twice), gordon, stewart, and johnson. that's second place to a whole bunch of cups (19)!

FlFlash I do appreciate you offering the food for thought on Martin. A racers racer for sure.

I guess you remember him as the ASA kid in those very Aero ASA Camaro's and the Ray Dillion offset chassis. Those years fly.

Another thing was after Mark's first shot at Winston Cup, and another ASA gig, he started running the Busch series in the mid 80s prior to another shot at cup.

That's my first memory of him running a Rousch car. My point, Mark just didn't sign on with Rousch when Jack put together a cup team. The had a few years together of building, and calling him a cornerstone or part of the foundation sounds accurate to me.

I do think GWC's and double file restarts hurt Mark. He is too much of gentleman for the rough housing needed today.

I can't believe that this debate continues. Congrats to Mark on a long and storied career but there is no comparison between these two. I have to believe that Mark is only getting the anti Jimmie vote on this one. If people are voting for their favorite or against their least favorites then this pole is doomed.

DP there's no debate, Jimmy's had a better career statisticly and is probably the better driver of the two Notice I said I voted For Jimmy and I've always been a MM fan.

You made the correct choice. ;) I'm talking about the Mark Martin side of the equation. Some of us are voting with our head, some with our hearts. There have certainly been a couple match-ups to date that have been debatable, IMO this isn't one of them. Earnhardt/Gordon was perfect example. That was debatable and could have legitimately gone in either direction.

I wonder about the rationale that three voters used when they voted for Herb Thomas over Richard Petty . Family members ..perhaps?

I almost voted for Herb myself..... I thought he was the inventor of Thomas' - English Muffins. Man, I love those things!

Funny, but it was actually his Grandfather Samuel Bath Thomas who made the brand famous. He imigrated from England in 1874, and founded the New York company in 1880.

And there ya go. Now you have me Googling again. ;)

lol I made it all up, but it's not my fault. In 1848, my great grandfather Josh Hughmore imigrated from England. 10 years later, he perfected the hobby of BS and raised it to an art form. So....it's a genetic thing. ;)

I absolutely love Mark Martin, but this isn't even close. Five championships to none isn't even debatable.
