20+ Historic Photos Of Love During Wartime

Picture #8, soldiers leaning out of a train, are what my memories are of how the soldiers looked as they leaned out of the windows. The ladies auxiliary from the local hospital knew in advance when the trains would arrive and stop at the local train station to drop off and pickup freight. The freight car was at the back of the train and troop transport cars toward the front so the troop cars were always next to our house. My mother and many other ladies from town climbed the embankment, up to trackside, to hand out hot coffee and fresh donuts and other baked goods to the boys. It was all very serious in our house and anything my parents could do for the war effort was done with pride. My oldest sister enlisted in the WAVES and after basic training and attending school, was an instructor at Great Lakes. I look back and recall how, in our small town, anytime a soldier did not return we all sensed a sadness. Because we all knew one another and during war, everybody is family.
