Bud, this has of course been gone over time and time again and it's an idea that I'd love to see come about, I don't think there's a chance in hell for it to come true. If one looks at what happened in the open wheel circuit when they split, one will notice that the fallout for those series is still happening. The IRL is just now about to stand on it's feet and the CART series is still reeling from the loses they have taken. I don't think that either Smitty or the Frances want something like that to happen. Besides, Smitty is working with the system in that he too is working his way to the west. Remember, it is Smitty that helped shut down the track at North Wilkesboro and Rockingham, two dates that have moved west of the Mississippi River. He would also like to take the remaining date at Darlington and move it west. So you can see that Smitty isn't playing for the traditional crowd.
Smitty has tried before to start something that might work for him with his WoO stint, but that didn't pan out very well and he let that go. I think that about the only way for a split body to work is just like what is going on now, only on a much bigger scene. There are of course, three major series in NASCAR and as long as the logo NASCAR is in front or included in the series, nothing will change. However, if Smitty, or someone else could step in and sponsor the Busch series, or even the truck series and run it up against the NASCAR Cup series, there might be a chance, but not much. Also, there are other series that have been gaining support of late such as the Hooter's Pro Cup series. The biggest obstacle that stands in the way is TV. NASCAR was still floundering until ESPN brought it to the forefront and look at the sport today. One other thing, who in their right mind would want to go head to head against NASCAR's Cup series? Even if someone did get a TV package, I doubt that they would want to challenge NASCAR. Both sanctioning bodies would try to work together to prevent that from happening, but only if the newer body had some clout. Otherwise, NASCAR would just chew them up and spit them out.
I think that the new NASCAR is here to stay and will as long as it draws the crowds and sponsorship. When that begins to fade, something else will step in and take over, but I'd say that is well down the road. If NASCAR is able to draw not only open wheel drivers, but also foreign drivers into the fold, I'd say they are still as strong as they ever have been.
