INSIDE TRACK COMMUNICATIONS EDITORS CHOICE AWARDS

The Inside Track Editor’s Choice Award is a creative CASCAR Super Series contingency program that rewards drivers who distinguish themselves in individual events, as well as over the course of the 12-race Super Series season.

For each Super Series feature event, Inside Track editor Greg MacPherson determined the recipient of the $250 cash prize. The winner was the racer who stood out the most, in terms of delivering an outstanding performance during the event, regardless of the result. sportsmanship and a dedication to the sport were other considerations.

In total, the Inside Track Editor’s Choice Award contingency program is worth $3,000.00 cash to CASCAR Super Series competitors.

WINNER ROUND #1: Jeff Lapcevich (Delaware Speedway)
Known as a road racing specialist, Jeff Lapcevich demonstrated he could get it done on the ovals, too, when he started 36th in the season-opening MOPAR 250 at Delaware and battled to a second-place result.

WINNER ROUND #2: Peter Gibbons (Cayuga Speedway)
Peter Gibbons decimated the field to earn his second win in as many races, building a 5.5-second lead at the finish of the Power Water 200 at Cayuga. Usually strong in the later races of the season, Gibbons exploded out of the starting blocks in ’04.

WINNER ROUND #3: Kerry Micks (Peterborough Speedway)
Kerry Micks started ninth at Peterborough and lost a lap as a result of a ‘stop and go’ penalty. He eventually got back on the lead lap and fought his way to a third-place podium result at the ‘tough-to-pass’ track.

WINNER ROUND #4: Scott Steckly (Mosport Int’l Raceway)
Scott Steckly collected his third top-four result in four races in ’04 when he finished fourth at the Mosport road course. It was the second year in a row that Steckly scored a top result at Mosport.

WINNER ROUND #5: Pete Shepherd (Cayuga Speedway)
Rookie Pete Shepherd Jr. came home fifth at Cayuga after an impressive run that saw him earn the pole and lead the first 38 laps, with poise, before settling into a comfortable pace that would see him notch his best CASCAR finish.

WINNER ROUND #6: Jeff Lapcevich (Molson Indy Toronto)
Jeff Lapcevich started on the pole and led every lap of the race around the streets of Toronto. It was his second T.O. Indy win in a row.

WINNER ROUND #7: Don Thomson Jr. (Molson Indy Vancouver)
While Jeff Lapcevich won yet another road course event, Don Thomson was taking another second-place finish. Thomson started eighth at Vancouver and pushed hard – too hard – in the late going, damaging the nose of his car in the process en route to a runner-up finish.

WINNER ROUND #8: Whitlock Motorsports – Dave Whitlock & Mark Dilley (Race City)
Dave Whitlock and Mark Dilley put on an amazing display at the end of the MOPAR 300 at Race City. The Whitlock Motorsports teammates raced side-by-side for laps on end, for the lead, displaying great ability and respect for each other. Eventually, Whitlock came home in front of Dilley to record the second ‘one-two’ finish of the season for the Whitlock Motorsports duo.

WINNER ROUND #9: Don Thomson Jr. (Mosport Speedway)
After starting on pole for the fifth time in nine races in ’04, Don Thomson dominated at Mosport Speedway to win his first CASCAR Super Series race in over two years. For Thomson, it was a big psychological win en route to his record-breaking fourth Super Series National title.

WINNER ROUND #10: Brad Graham (Peterborough Speedway)
Brad Graham’s string of Super Series bad luck continued at Peterborough. While running third with less than 10 laps to go, Graham’s engine went south, thus spoiling a podium run. For Graham, having
top finishes snatched from his grasp is an all-too-familiar story. Aside from the finish, Graham once again showed he’s a threat to win on the Super Series.

WINNER ROUND #11: Peter Gibbons (Delaware Speedway)
Peter Gibbons won his fifth Great Canadian 300 on Labour Weekend at Delaware Speedway. Making the achievement all the more spectacular, Gibbons won the race from the last row after his qualifying time was thrown out for a ride-height infraction. This classic Gibbons charge was
fun to watch.

WINNER ROUND #12: J.R. Fitzpatrick (Kawartha Speedway)
Kawartha was a ‘breakthrough’ race for J.R. Fitzpatrick, much the same way that Race City was for his fellow rookie, Pete Shepherd. ‘J.R.’ qualified on the second row and posted the fastest lap of the race.
And until his car cut out on pit road, ultimately costing him the rookie title, J.R. was biding his time in third place in the season finale, showing he could run with the best of them.
