One observation that is overlooked by a lot of fans is that this season was a give away year for GM in general and Chevy in particular. I lot of the wins this year by Chevy drivers would never have occured last season and likely wont occur next season. Mike Waltrip, T. Labonte and Nemechek are just three obvious examples of the Nascar mandated 'parity' of this season.
Anyway, some drivers can rise to the occasion regardless of whatever manipulations Nascar tries to pull. Obviously Kenseth this year is a clear example of that. Jeff Gordon and Stewart are two other drivers that always seem to do well.
Of all the drivers on the list I would have to say the most talent (with car brand aside and all else being equal) would lie with Stewart and Busch. Newman is good but engineering can only take you so far---sooner or later you are going to be forced to outdrive the other guys on equal terms. Now the question is will we ever see a day when the driver---not Nascar politics or souvenir sales---determines who will win races or the cup? Hell, I dont know.
But if we do it's going to be a two horse show with Stewart and Busch at the top.
Count my vote for Tony over Kurt but just barely.

Good points 97 and your choice is as good as it can get. We always seem to judge the next year on what happens this year and if one would look back, it seldom comes together that way. I can remember when everyone thought that Jeff Burton would be the next champ or that Mark Martin would certainly be the man to beat. Who would have thought at the end of last year that with two races left this year, Matt Kenseth would all but have the title sewed up and that Jr would be in second place.
With NASCAR approving the new heads for Ford, it's quite conceivable that Matt could repeat or for that matter, Dale Jarrett once again winning the title. I'd like to think that Ryan Newman could continue in his winning ways, but history tells me that he won't.
I like Tony Stewart as the choice for next years champ.

Jeff Burton...seemed to do well with soft gumbos and seemed like the wheels fell off the car when hard tires came along...now, we're going back to soft.

Now that I have thought about this some more,I wouldn't rule out a points battle like we had in the Busch series this year for the Nextel Cup in '04,I really think it's gonna be a battle between Jr,Newman,Harvick,Stewart and Kurt Busch. With Bobby Labonte,Kenseth ,Gordon,Jimmie Johnson and yes Terry Labonte sticking their noses in it all year long. I wouldn't rule out comebacks by DJ,Mark Martin,Sterling and Rusty next year either.

If the Roush guys could keep up 40 horsepower below the competition just imagine what they could do with a better body and engine(new cylinder heads)...
