Although he hasn't discussed it with team owner Rick Hendrick, Mark Martin would like to drive at least one more full season in the #5 after this year. When the 50-year-old driver signed a two-year deal with HMS midway through last season, the plan was to run a full schedule in 2009 and perhaps split the 2010 season with Brad Keselowski or another driver. "A lot of things have changed since May and June of '08," Martin said on Friday at Bristol Motor Speedway. "When it all comes down to it, it's not about contracts. It's all about what we all want." What Martin wants, despite a tough start that has him 35th in owner points, is to continue at his current pace.(ESPN.com)(3-20-2009)

I'm sorry, but I don't think Marky knows what he wants to do. I've given up trying to figure out when he wants to retire or race. Let's ask Jack Roush what he thinks.

As a Packers fan, I think he's the Brett Favre of NASCAR. :p

same old, same old, i've heard this story before. mark can still race competitively but i just wish he'd stop talking. i wonder how many fans he's lost with his indecisiveness on when to retire.

Lost me as a fan 3 years ago.

Yeah i use to be a big fan but i lost alot of respect for him, this was suppossed to be his 4th year of retirement.

When was the last time he won a race? When was the last time he won the cup? He will never be competative again. He has won 35 races in 30 years. He hasn't won a race in the last four years.

I do like to see the old guys out there racing but look at the stats. When a racer hits 40 it is all down hill.

I am not trying to rain on anyones parade but he has made enough money to retire, like four times...

Hey if your a fan your a fan. I went to Atlanta in Nov of 1992 thinking Richard Petty would make a come back and win his last race.

I agree with tkj, once a fan, always a fan. :)

A washup when you turn 40? Someone needed to clue in Harry Gant.

As for Mark, if he didn't get such a horrible start this year I think he would have been okay with 2010. What can you say, the man hadn't won a pole in 8 years and then wins two back to back. The man still has the drive and seemingly the ability. If he had one at least one championship with Roush maybe he really would have retired. He is a madman on a mission and I kinda like it.

First off, I like Mark! And I did not say "washed up", I said it goes downhill after 40. Your reaction time just isn't the same. Mark is in better physical condition than almost every cup driver out there. If he could develop a pit bull mentality he would be much better off. He is just too much of a gentleman on and off the track.

Harry Gant was the guy I cheered for from about 1980 until he quit. He raced 22 years and had 18 cup wins. He never won the cup. If he had started at the cup level when he was 25 I would bet those statistics would be better.

not competetive??????? 2 pole and a outside front row...... running 4th with the best car on the track when he broke..... running 7th at Daytona when the (bad) decision was made to pit....... he would have had all top 10's this year if not for bad breaks....... his results do not show what he has done.....
no wins in four years....... he should have 2 or three.... Richmond, Phoenix, and cant remember the other, but pit strategy and running outta gas cost him..... not to mention he hasn't had a full season........
Don't throw dirt on him yet. He isn't like Richard or DW back in the day..... He WILL win at LEAST one this year.
As for losin fans...... was a fan of his since the 70's in ASA, followed him to NASCAR....... now, I am a ( GULP, this hurts to say...) a HMS, Chevy, MARK MARTIN fan..........:beerbang:

I thought when Terry retired, I would be through with HMS. LOL

Well I still think he should of retired when he said he was going to the first time. He goes on this extended retirement tour , makes tons of $$ from souvenior sales doing it, then decides not to retire.....ok whatever I can live with that once. How many times did he retire or semi retire in the last four years? I personally do not like the guy anymore,I don't think he has it in him to win a Cup Title, never did, he chokes when it comes down to needing brass tacs. He has had a decent career and should of hung it up after Rousch, end of story.

True to a point. Yes, if you're a fan you're a fan. But there does come a point when all the driver is doing is tarnishing his legacy. I was ahuge fan of Petty and DW, but still, especially as a fan, felt they went on way too long.

Thats what I admire about Rusty...He retired..end of story.

yep, he and mark went out the same year...sorta.

The way I look at it he just can't stop, first it was because of his kid, so he would have an in to the sport. Now it is because he is chasing that elusive championship.....well get over it already. If he does not win the first part of this season he won't win again, that is my prediction and I'm sticking to it.....lol. I used to like the guy, but now I can't stand him, he should of retired three years ago, gone out with some dignity and respect, but now it is too late.

He plain dont know what he wants.....I dont listen to him anymore.

I have to say he really is starting to look old when I saw him on the telly today

This is when I really liked Marky. I've not rooted for him in years.

I've always liked Mark Martin and I'm glad he hasn't retired.

He was going to retire at the end of the 2005 season and had announced that in 2004. I think what it is his performances in 2003 and 2004 weren't as good as the prior several years and he was thinking about it often. His lone 2004 victory at Dover, as sweet as it was, just happened to be pure luck. Right spot, right time (Dover paid him back for the 1994 fall race). Then, I think his wins in the All-Star Race and Kansas changed his mind and he wanted to get in one more year.

After 2006, he went part-time but had spectacular seasons. In 2007, he just barely lost the Daytona 500 and left leading the points. Honestly he should've finished that season out. Not that David Ragan's done any better, and I'm really rooting for David.

If 2009 had stated the same way he started in 2007, everyone would be talking about that elusive and long overdue championship. Performance-wise, he's been a championship contender. It's just horrible racing luck (somethink Mark's always had).

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride!

NASCAR took the Daytona 2007 win from him. There should have been a caution thrown....

I disagree. The wreck was going to continue to happen, caution or not. It was behind the leaders and everyone else was going to get swept up in it no matter what. I think NASCAR was right for letting them race back to the line. Besides, they threw the caution and checkers together.

Being a Harvick fan and a Martin fan - that race was easily the best Sprint Cup race of all time to me and I would've been happy with the result either way. :D

Want to talk about a sucky ending to the Daytona 500, talk about this year's finish.

Say all you want about lucky wins, but the driver of the pace car has the luckiest win of all time...no wait, you say he didn't win that race? It's in the books. Now that was lucky on his part for sure. :)

please remind me, for i wasn't alert when he drove ;)

I thought Derrik Cope was the luckiest...

Cope was lucky....... BUT the thing about Cope, was the fact he was in the right place right time. Yea it was his biggest win, Daytona and yadda yadda yadda.......
The race that Buck is referin too.....welll, don't know where to start...... lets just say the scorers really like Brett. To this day, there are still arguments startin over the finish from that day at N Wilksboro.
as I remember, Brett was havin a decent day..... top 10..... he pitted, and most say he went a lap down.......... NASCAR contended he didn't. Caution came out, and somehow when the smoke settled, I think Brett was on a lap by himself, in the lead....... my memory is a lil foggy and the race was like 20 years ago...... but as near as I recall, it was somehtin along those lines.

Do we have to do this so early in the year?
