I remember when this thing was at least a little bit special. Now it seems that just about anyone can run this race. In fact, I'm not so sure that I'm not eligible for this thing the more I look at it. It won't be too much longer and they'll be pulling some lucky fans out of the stands to participate in this race. Anyhow, here's how you get in and who's eligible for the upcoming Shootout.

The criteria to make the 2012 Budweiser Shootout is based upon the following qualifications, with eligibility based on a driver having competed in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series within the last two seasons:

* The 25 drivers who finished in the top 25 in drivers points in 2011
* Past Budweiser Shootout champions
* Past Daytona points race winners

Drivers eligible for the 2012 Budweiser Shootout include:
2011 Top 25 Driver Points

#14-Tony Stewart
#99-Carl Edwards
#29-Kevin Harvick
#17-Matt Kenseth
#2-Brad Keselowski
#48-Jimmie Johnson
#88-Dale Earnhardt Jr.
#24-Jeff Gordon
#11-Denny Hamlin
#39-Ryan Newman
#?-Kurt Busch
#18-Kyle Busch
#15-Clint Bowyer
#5-Kasey Kahne
#43-A.J. Allmendinger
#16-Greg Biffle
#27-Paul Menard
#56-Martin Truex Jr.
#9-Marcos Ambrose
#31-Jeff Burton
#42-Juan Pablo Montoya
#55-Mark Martin
#?-David Ragan
#20-Joey Logano
#?-Brian Vickers

Others (criteria in parentheses)

#?-Bill Elliott (Daytona 500, Coke Zero 400, Budweiser Shootout)
#?-Geoff Bodine (Daytona 500, Budweiser Shootout)
#?-Derrike Cope (Daytona 500)
#?-Michael Waltrip (Daytona 500, Coke Zero 400)
#1-Jamie McMurray (Daytona 500, Coke Zero 400)
#?-Trevor Bayne (Daytona 500)
#?-Terry Labonte (Budweiser Shootout)
#?-Ken Schrader (Budweiser Shootout)

Side note..... I heard Scott Speed won an iRacing event the other day. NASCAR is now debating whether or not he is now eligible for the Bud Shootout.

If Derrick is sick , can one of the Cope girls take his spot? Or is it passed down father to son?

To think that they could take this date and give us a race at Rockingham or North Wilkesboro ..

Pretty soon we'll all have the option to stay @ home and watch this race or make the trip to Daytona to participate as a driver. ;)

It may have been easier for them to have just published the list of drivers that aren't eligible rather than the 33 that are.

So pretty much if you even know what the Bud Shootout is you're qualified for it? I'm surprised they didn't make a new rule that states anyone who drove a #7 in the Nationwide series in 2010 can compete.

Any fan who made it out of Kentucky in less than an hour is also eligable.

It beats last year when RoTY got you in.

I like it 25 to 30 of the best drivers running balls out for 75 laps.

No boreing long race with a bunch of cars not being competitive or just riding around cruising, no points racing bs, pure racing......Isn't that what most fans have been whining about and wanting???

The new format is a joke. Nothing special about it. But it is the first racing action of the year.

But I have been to Daytona that means I get a ride right?

You mean win the pole?

Yes. At least that made sense. It was the Bud Shootout with the Bud Pole winners running in the show. It's certainly understandable why that criteria can no longer be used with Coors being the Pole sponsor. Why can't they do something like the top 10 from the prior years standings and then anyone else that won a race that wasn't part of the top 10? That would have made a field of 19, I think. Instead, we're left with a watered down field.

Top 25 seems a bit much, but I like seeing some of the retired guys getting a chance to race.

Sometimes it's better to remember how they were. There's a reason most of them retired. Heck, throw Ol' DW out there and he'll probably be running around with his left turn signal on the entire time. Besides, do you remember how well the retired drivers played out @ Bristol? Not so well.

These guys aren't as old, and they'll be in the safer CoT. I thought it was insane to put those old guys in the old frame BEFORE the race even started. Larry Pearson almost got killed, and he sure could have used the set back, Sherman tank driver side of the new car. He would have stepped out with a few bruises.

Just to toss fuel on the fire here's your past 30 pole winners in cronological order you have to go all the way back to Michigan 2007 to get them:

4-Tony Stewart
5-Martin Truex
6-Ryan Newman
7-David Reutimann
8-Kasey Kahne
9-Kyle Busch
10-Joey Lagano
11-David Ragan
12-Kurt Busch
13-Bad Keselowski

Figure out where you want your cut off and add in past Winners: Bill Elliot, Geoff Bodine,Derrick Cope, Trevor Bayne, Terry Labonte, Kenny Schrader, Michael Waltrip dependent on your cut off.
Of course out of those I would only reasonably expect Bayne and Waltrip to get in a Cup car....never know about that damn Schrader though.

I don't get your point. They don't base it off of pole winners and even when they did it was only on the previous years pole winners.

Exactly Fans complained there were'nt enough drivers in it or current drivers or Their Favorite drivers when they did it the old way so they changed it to make Fans Happy...... apparently still not Happy.

No, they changed it because Budweiser no longer is the pole sponsor as it used to be. Coors sponsors the pole. That's why the eligibility changed. Budweiser is not going to throw an exhibition race to celebrate the Coors Pole awards.

Yes Sir butt I still think it should be for Pole Winners and I'm a Traditionalist so thats why my list came out the way it did. Pole Winners no longer get the credit they deserve in my opinion.
I guess you could call me UnHappy about it too ;) Even still I attend it every year.

Gotcha. I understand now.

I used to be of the same mindset. But..... I realized it doesn't make good business sense.

I'm simply on the 'pissed bandwagon' when it comes to qualifying for this race. Make it mean something or just make it another points race somewhere else.

Last year they came up with quite a formula to keep the Miller Lite car out of the race. Anyone except blue cars with a beer sponsor.

I guess I'm old fashioned or stubborn but I don't think Good Business Sense should get in the way of doing things the Right way.

Since this is an exhibition race - for the fans and some cash - why not let the fans decide? We could take the results of Greg's contest and use the Top 25 as entries for the race. Those who are no longer with us or able could designate a driver to take their spot or have one designated for them.

25 cars, 75 laps, winner take all.

Lets go allout old school. Every driver has to shotgun a six pack of bud in under 10 minutes. Anyone who can make it to their car is in the race.

Good Lord can you imagine the Political Correctness Nightmare that would ensue after that???

I'm in if that comes about though ;)
