The Indy Racing League is planning on having a new chassis design by 2012. They have been talking to Dallara, Delta Wing, Lola, and Swift. They are looking at a chassis that is more cost efficient, more sponsor logo area, lighter, racier, and made in the USA, particularly Indiana.

Here are 3 concept chassis pictures. I personally like Concept 1 or 2. 1 being my favorite.

lol, love the logo area requirement. as long as they've picked the state to build it in why not simply announce the chosen (to be) manufacturer now? <g>

Concept 1 is the one I like best, #2 looks too "fiberglassy" ie too many curves, and #3 is just ugly, looks like a flying wing.

but, #1 looks too much like the new F1 package to an extent.

These concept cars are all Dallara and will be built in Indianapolis.

Here's some more concept art:

In general, I like these concepts. They look more like an F1 car than the current F1 cars. :beerbang:

Thats what I dont like. Europe can keep their F1 and F1 body styl. IRL should have a completely different body style to be distinct.

Delta Wing is set to reveal their chassis concept for IndyCar tomorrow.

Here is a preview but the car is covered up.

Here's the Delta Wing concept as seen at the Chicago Auto Show.

I can't imagine this will be the final design. For one thing, how will this thing handle turns? Second, when looking at it from above it looks like a *****.

Constructed of carbon fiber using recycled polyethylene, the car functions because of the weight: the entire car, including the driver, will come in at 1,000 lbs. Such light weight allows the engineers to have an even bigger impact on performance through the use of aerodynamics and that's the trick with the Delta Wing. The bulk of the downforce is placed further back on the chassis, which allows the front end to be lightened and narrowed, and rely on the rear of the car to provide stability while the front does the steering. According to engineers we spoke to, the thousands of hours of simulation show entry speeds in corners will be slightly lower, but unsurprisingly the top speeds down the straight will be faster. Remember this is on a car with only 300 horsepower. The car is half the weight, has half the drag, half the fuel consumption, half the power and the big reason the owners like it is it costs half as much as the current IndyCar chassis from Dallara. It's currently only a concept, but it's got strong backing and has changed a lot of thinking about what open wheel racers can be.

one thing is for sure, the irl isn't in (won't be) in kansas anymore dorothy.

Who is the crack-smoker we have to thank for that nonsense? Like foehammer says...how is that thing supposed to turn? Those are motorcycle tires on the front with no front spoilers!

The engineers say that the simulations show the entry speeds into the turns will be slower, but they claim the straightaway speeds will be higher.

Even if this is true, simulators don't tell the whole story. Things can be very different on the track. Also, I don't think this has been tested on road courses or in traffic.

I recently saw a poll where the manufacturer, Swift was leading in popular votes.

I like the 1 and 3 of the Dallara. 1 because it looks more traditional and the 3rd because it seems like a logical next step. To me anyway.

Delta Wings just looks plain stupid and dangerous. Won't work unless they intend on turning IRL into a drag racing series.

Here is the design of Lola. It isnt bad either.

So what are the engineers going to tell us next? The sky is blue and water is wet? Imagine that thing at places like Belle Isle trying to whip around those zero degree banked corners. I bet my Mercury Sable under-steers less than that POS.

The Sable can steer? I thought it was 100% understeer.

Kidding aside, i concur.

Personally I like Concept 3, it's more streamlined.
